Job summary

Joint Munitions Command at Pine Bluff Arsenal is seeking a Maintenance Mechanic to upkeep buildings and grounds. You will lay brick, repair structures, plan work from drawings, and perform welding and pipe installation to ensure waterproof finishes.

Requires ability to perform the work with minimal supervision and physical stamina for demanding tasks in varied conditions. Candidates must meet DoD requirements and pass pre-employment checks.

  • Physical stamina to perform rigorous masonry, carpentry, welding and roofing tasks.
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, blueprints, templates, jigs for fabrication.

Job description

This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for (DIB) & Major Range and Test Facilities Base (MRTFB) in DoD to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: This position is with the Joint Munitions Command located at Pine Bluff Arsenal. This position serves as a Maintenance Mechanic upkeeping the buildings, grounds and related structures for the Arsenal.

Major Duties
  • Lays brick to repair various structures.
  • Plans work in accordance with drawings and blueprints.
  • Performs welder duties using electric, acetylene and/or inert gas shielded welding processes.
  • Opens roofs to install pipes assuring final work is waterproof.
  • Determines if disassembly or repair is necessary and the materials to be used.
Conditions of Employment
  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain an asbestos certification card for the removal and encapsulation of asbestos.
  • Incumbent subject to pre-employment and annual physicals.
  • This position is subject to Drug Abuse Testing Program requirements.
Qualifications

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Maintenance Mechanic without more than normal supervision. Duties which include planning masonry work, use of power tools, and use of templates, jigs, blueprints or other guides to fabricate metal items for equipment. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • Physical Effort: Requires considerable standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, and walking. Works on ladders and scaffolds which requires working overhead or in stretched, cramped, or awkward positions. Arm movement is considerable. Masonry and cement finishing work requires frequent lifting and carrying items that weigh about 50 pounds.
  • Working Conditions: Work is done inside and outside. Carpenter is subject to cuts from hand and powered tools and danger from flying splinters and chips. In masonry and cement finishing work, employee is exposed to dust and dirt when mixing cement and mortar. The work requires moderate to strenuous physical effort and long periods of walking, standing, climbing, and bending. Subject to danger of falling when working from ladders and scaffolds. Welding involves exposure to infrared and ultraviolet radiation, heat, flying sparks, the glare of torches and heated materials, the possibility of eye injury, electrical shock, burns, broken bones, and the chance of cuts when working with sharp objects. Position requires prolonged standing on concrete floors. There is discomfort when wearing protective clothing, gloves, and flash shield or eye goggles. Work is performed inside and outside in all kinds of weather, from below freezing to above 105 degrees Fahrenheit, and in rain and wind. Work is frequently performed on concrete floors in cramped quarters and awkward positions requiring employees to stand for prolonged periods of time. Is frequently required to wear respiratory protection, coveralls, disposable outer garments, gloves and safety boots shoes. The level of protective equipment is dependent on the measures, exposures or operational needs according to regulations pertaining to Asbestos Abatement, including identification, worker protection, removal and disposal as covered in OSHA 1926.58, EPA, NESHAPS, 40CFR61, ADPC&E, all Pine Bluff Arsenal SOP's and Regulations.
