BRIEF DESCRIPTION AND REQUIREMENTS

Must have journeyman’s papers with 2 to 3 years’ experience performing complex work as a tool and die maker or Machinist, or 10 years’ experience performing complex work as a tool and die maker or Machinist.

Primary Responsibilities - Performs a variety of duties according to department guidelines, including:

  • Verify dimensions, alignments, and clearances of finished parts using measuring instruments such as calipers, gauge blocks, micrometers, or dial indicators.
  • Set up and operate machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, or grinders to shape parts to specifications.
  • Visualize and compute dimensions, sizes, shapes, and tolerances based on specifications.
  • Study blueprints and sketches to plan fabrication sequences.
  • Fit and assemble parts to create or modify dies, jigs, gauges, and tools.
  • Inspect finished dies for quality and defects.
  • Select appropriate metals and alloys based on properties like hardness or heat tolerance.
  • Secure machined parts on worktables using hoists, vises, or other tools.
  • File, grind, and adjust parts for proper fit.
  • Polish surfaces using appropriate tools.
  • Lay out machining work using measuring instruments.
  • Conduct test runs and make adjustments to ensure quality.
  • Design jigs, fixtures, and templates for manufacturing.
  • Cut, shape, and trim materials to specified sizes.
  • Operate drill presses for assembly.
  • Control heat-treating furnace operations.
  • Attend educational workshops and review technical publications to maintain knowledge.
  • Document actions and communicate irregularities to ensure team continuity.
  • Follow safety procedures and maintain a clean work environment.
  • Communicate effectively to resolve mechanical issues.
  • Participate in training apprentices as needed.
  • Use computerized systems for maintenance data management.
  • Observe safe work practices and ensure safety for others.
  • Perform other duties as required.
