Role Purpose: Setup and operate Prototrak lathe and manual lathes utilizing appropriate fixtures, turning tools, attachments, and materials (metals, plastics, and alloys).

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Set up and operate Prototrak lathe and manual lathes.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawing and GD&T.
  • Perform turning, threading, facing, boring, and part finishing operations.
  • Use precise measure tools (e.g.: micrometers, calipers, indicators, etc.) to inspect parts to print specifications.
  • Write and modify basic conversational programs on Prototrak controls.
  • Ensure proper tool selection, part alignment, and workholding for each job.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area in accordance with company safety standards.
  • Conduct regular maintenance and troubleshooting on machinery and other shop equipment, ensuring they operate smoothly and efficiently.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Other Significant Role Requirements:

Physical Demands

  • Required to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Occasionally required to bend (sandblasting, deburring).
  • Adequate dexterity for using various hand tools.
  • Ability to install and uninstall tools, parts, and fixtures from machines.
  • Visual acuity to read directions and prints, and to inspect parts closely to ensure they meet specifications.
  • Physical strength to lift and carry 35 pounds occasionally.
  • Able and willing to work overtime, including Saturdays, on a continuing basis as needed.
  • Frequent changeovers between one-off and low volume jobs.
  • Holding tight tolerances without full CNC automation.
  • Balancing manual craftmanship with basic programming skills.
  • Problem-solving on-the-fly when faced with non-standard setups or unexpected issues.

  • Attention to detail – Precision and focus on maintaining tolerances and finish.
  • Problem-Solving Skills – Ability to troubleshoot machining or setup issues.
  • Time Management – Efficient workflow planning and multitasking on job orders.
  • Safety Awareness – Familiarity with shop safety protocols and PPE (personal protective equipment) usage.
  • Teamwork & Communication – Able to follow instructions and coordinate with engineers, supervisors, and quality teams.

Education and/or Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Additional vocational training or certification in machining is a plus.
  • 5+ years of experience in operating lathes, preferably with Prototrak systems.
