Job summary

Job Summary: The Maintenance Technician/Groundskeeper performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance and groundskeeping duties to maintain the safety, cleanliness, appearance, and functionality of Hill College facilities and grounds. Responsibilities include preventative and corrective building maintenance, landscaping, equipment operation, seasonal campus maintenance, event support, and emergency response activities. This position helps ensure the College provides a safe, attractive, and welcoming environment for students, employees, and visitors while supporting the College's mission of operational excellence.

Education: High school diploma or equivalent.

Preferred: Technical or vocational training related to facilities maintenance, landscaping, or grounds management.

Experience: One year of experience in groundskeeping, landscaping, facilities maintenance, or a related field.

Experience operating commercial maintenance and landscaping equipment.

Experience performing preventative maintenance and minor repairs involving plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, or similar trades.

Core Duties and

Required Knowledge: Performs minor building maintenance and repairs involving carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical fixtures, fencing, signage, and related facilities components.

Safely operates and performs routine maintenance on hand tools, power equipment, mowers, tractors, blowers, pressure washers, and other groundskeeping equipment.

Complete preventative maintenance on campus equipment and facilities.

Assist with furniture moving, hauling, deliveries, and campus setup.

Maintains campus grounds through mowing, edging, trimming, pruning, weeding, mulching, fertilizing, and other landscaping activities.

Performs routine custodial and exterior cleaning tasks, including litter removal, trash collection, pressure washing, and maintaining sidewalks, parking lots, and outdoor common areas.

Assists with seasonal maintenance activities, including removal of leaves, debris, snow, ice, and other hazards from walkways and parking areas as needed.

Maintains knowledge of groundskeeping practices, equipment operation, workplace safety procedures, and applicable environmental regulations.

Supports compliance with Hill College policies, procedures, and safety standards while maintaining a positive campus environment.

Recommend improvements that enhance efficiency, sustainability, safety, and campus appearance.

Support departmental planning and continuous improvement initiatives.

Collaboration: Works collaboratively with Facilities, Custodial Services, contractors, faculty, staff, and other departments to maintain campus facilities and grounds while providing excellent customer service to students, employees, and visitors.

Participation in an on‑call rotation and response to campus emergencies outside normal business hours may be required.

Occasional travel to other campuses and locations as needed.

Security sensitive position.

Performs all other duties as assigned.

Scheduled work hours are Monday – Friday 7:00 am to 3:30 pm with a 30-minute lunch.

This position follows the Campus Safety/Physical Plant holiday work schedule, which differs from the College’s standard holiday schedule.

This position is designated as an essential position. Employees in this role are expected to report to work or remain available during inclement weather, campus emergencies, or other operational disruptions, as directed, to help maintain safe campus conditions and support essential college operations.

Employees called in outside their regularly scheduled work hours should expect to work a minimum of three (3) hours, unless released earlier due to operational needs.

Physical Requirements

Heavy work; exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. The use of arm and or leg controls requires exertion of force greater than that for medium work.

Work is performed primarily outdoors and requires frequent exposure to varying weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, wind, dust, pollen, and humidity.
