Job Summary

The Grounds Working Foreman is responsible for overseeing and assisting groundskeepers in the maintenance and care of the college’s grounds, including the upkeep of landscaped areas, irrigation systems, and equipment. The Foreman ensures that grounds maintenance activities are performed efficiently and safely. The Foreman will work under the supervision of the Associate Director – Facilities and Grounds, ensuring that regular tasks and work orders are properly assigned, tracked, and completed.

Responsibilities
  • Supervise and work alongside a team of groundskeepers, providing clear task assignments and ensuring high‑quality execution of grounds maintenance activities
  • Perform hands‑on groundskeeping duties, leading by example and ensuring efficient work practices across the team
  • Train groundskeepers on proper equipment operation, safety protocols, and best practices in landscaping and irrigation
  • Limit office‑based work to two hours per day to maximize time spent in the field overseeing maintenance tasks and working directly with the team
  • Oversee the day‑to‑day upkeep of campus grounds, including mowing, edging, trimming, weeding, and the care of trees, shrubs, and flower beds
  • Ensure proper operation, repair, and installation of irrigation systems, including troubleshooting and fixing issues with irrigation controls, sprinkler heads, and back‑flow prevention systems
  • Regularly inspect grounds to identify issues and coordinate corrective actions for landscape or irrigation problems
  • Assist in the licensed application of herbicides, pesticides, and other chemicals as required, ensuring compliance with safety and environmental regulations
  • Oversee the use, maintenance, and repair of groundskeeping equipment such as commercial riding mowers, blowers, trimmers, and tractors
  • Ensure all equipment is in good working condition and coordinate with the Associate Director of Facilities and Grounds on equipment repairs or replacements as needed
  • Maintain an organized inventory of groundskeeping supplies, materials, and tools, and ensure proper usage and storage by the team
  • Enforce safety protocols and train staff in the safe operation of all groundskeeping equipment and proper use of chemicals
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal safety regulations, particularly OSHA standards for workplace safety
  • Perform regular safety inspections of equipment and grounds, addressing any hazards or deficiencies in a timely manner
  • Track regular tasks and work orders to ensure all grounds maintenance activities are logged and completed within expected timeframes
  • Provide regular updates to the Associate Director regarding work progress, equipment condition, and personnel performance
  • Assist in preparing reports on grounds maintenance activities, inventory usage, and equipment status
  • Coordinate with the Associate Director, Director, and VP of Operations to ensure grounds maintenance activities support the plans and priorities of the college
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Three (3) years of verifiable experience in commercial or institutional grounds maintenance, including irrigation system installation and repair
  • Knowledge of groundskeeping equipment such as commercial mowers, blowers, edgers, trimmers, and irrigation systems
  • Must possess or obtain a Texas TDA Pesticide Applicator License
  • Proven supervisory or leadership experience in a commercial or institutional grounds maintenance setting
  • Strong working knowledge of safety regulations, including OSHA standards
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and equipment manuals
  • Must possess a valid Texas Driver License, have a good driving record, and be insurable on Midland College’s insurance policy
Preferred Qualifications
  • Texas Certified Landscape Irrigator or Master Gardener Certificate
  • Prior experience supervising a team of grounds personnel in a commercial or institutional setting
  • Knowledge of irrigation system design and troubleshooting techniques
Physical Demands
  • Must be able to stand and walk for long periods of time
  • Must be able to bend, stoop, kneel, or crouch for long periods of time
  • The person in this position needs to move or drive to other locations on and off campus
  • Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation
  • Use of manual dexterity
  • Ability to ascend/descend ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, and/or poles
  • Ability to operate motorized equipment
  • Must be able to bend, reach overhead, and lift/move equipment in excess of 75 pounds
  • The person in this position frequently communicates with others verbally and electronically; must be able to exchange accurate information
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus
  • Duties indoors and some outdoors in different weather conditions
  • Ability to work extended hours and attend Midland College or community events
  • Ability to work extended hours, nights, weekends, and holidays as needed
