Job summary

The Department of Transportation in Illinois is seeking a Maintenance Equipment Technician/Engineering Technician IV to lead maintenance and repair of trucks and off-road equipment across regions. You will train staff, diagnose problems with advanced tools, and ensure safe operation of plant machinery.

Requires two years of college in civil engineering technology or related field with five years of experience, or seven years of engineering experience; a CDL is required.

Position Overview

This position is accountable for the technical guidance, training, and support for the use, operation, and repair of equipment in assigned geographical areas.

Essential Functions
  • Ensures effective expenditures of budgetary funds for truck and major off road equipment repairs.
  • Provides training for personnel on equipment operation and repairs.
  • Provides appropriate solutions to technical equipment problems and uses diagnostic equipment to assessproblems
  • Provides training and guidance in the safe use and maintenance of equipment.
  • Provides guidance on the utilization of department provided software and hardware for equipmentrepairs.
  • Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules. Performs all duties in a manner conducive tothe fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Completion of two years of college in civil engineering technology, pre-engineering or a job relatedtechnical/science curriculum PLUS five years of engineering experience; OR Seven years ofengineering experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Training in automotive and/or diesel technology equivalent to 2 years mechanical engineeringcoursework.
  • Knowledge skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of two years of coursework in equipment repairs and diesel engine diagnostics.
  • Proficient in the use of inventory databases and software, Asset Management Program (AMP), Cummins Insite, Networked Equipment Diagnostics (NED), Diagnostic Link Bus (DLB), Bendix ACom, Allison Diagnostic Optimized Connection (DOC), Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook, office equipment function and repair, engine vehicle diagnostic software and programming.
  • Eight years of experience operating or managing a large fleet of trucks, off road construction equipment, snow and ice equipment.
  • Strong working knowledge and experience in vehicle fleet operations, light to heavy duty vehicle mechanical function and repair.
  • Mechanical experience, aptitude, and ability to solve problems and work independently.
  • Strong oral and written communications skills.
  • Experience and background in training others.
