Job description

Description

Your skills help make every day at the Y possible.

The Summit Area YMCA is seeking a skilled, dependable Maintenance Engineer to manage daily maintenance and facility needs primarily at our Summit YMCA branch. This full-time, hands‑on role reports to the Facilities Director and also supports major maintenance projects or issues at the Berkeley Heights YMCA, Springfield Community Pool, The Learning Circle YMCA, and Association Services as needed.

You’ll perform repairs, coordinate preventive maintenance, work with vendors, and provide hands‑on support and technical guidance to maintenance staff across these sites. You may also serve as a team lead, helping coordinate work priorities and guide maintenance projects.

You May Be the Right Fit If…
  • You bring hands‑on building maintenance experience and feel confident troubleshooting problems and making repairs.
  • You enjoy hands‑on work and take pride in a well‑maintained facility.
  • You’re organized, dependable, and able to balance daily requests with preventive maintenance.
  • You communicate well and enjoy working with staff, contractors, and members.
  • You stay calm when unexpected issues arise and follow through to get them resolved.
  • You can communicate in both English and Spanish, a helpful skill for working with our team, though not required.
What You’ll Do:
  • Conduct daily facility walkthroughs to identify maintenance needs and safety concerns.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and general repairs involving HVAC, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, carpentry, and pool equipment within your training and experience.
  • Manage maintenance requests and work orders, keeping accurate records and communicating progress.
  • Help coordinate daily work priorities with maintenance and housekeeping staff and provide hands‑on support.
  • Coordinate vendor services, required inspections, and corrective work with the Facilities Director.
  • Work with Aquatics staff to support safe, reliable pool operations.
  • Maintain supplies, tools, and equipment and recommend needed repairs or improvements.
  • Assist with facility projects, program and event setups, seasonal grounds upkeep, and snow and ice removal.
  • Respond to urgent maintenance needs and facility emergencies, including after‑hours calls as needed.
  • Work closely with branch leadership and program staff to minimize disruptions and maintain a welcoming environment.
Pay, Schedule & Work Environment

This is a full‑time, non-exempt position with an annual salary range of $52,000–$62,000.

A flexible schedule is required, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and additional hours to respond to urgent maintenance needs or after‑hours facility emergencies. While this role is responsible for maintenance at the Summit branch, the maintenance team works together to support all Summit Area YMCA branches as needed.

The role involves indoor and outdoor work, standing and walking, climbing, bending, kneeling, and lifting or moving up to 50 pounds, with reasonable accommodations available.

The Summit Area YMCA offers a generous benefits package that includes:

  • Subsidized medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Life and long‑term disability insurance.
  • Paid vacation and holidays.
  • Free YMCA family membership.
  • Discounts on YMCA programs and services, including childcare and camp.
  • Ongoing professional development and training opportunities.
  • A 12% employer contribution to the YMCA retirement plan upon eligibility.
  • Full Time service at the Y qualifies for Public Service Student Loan Forgiveness (PSLF)
