The Sexton supports the daily cleaning, setup, and maintenance of church facilities. This role ensures that all spaces are clean, organized, and ready to support worship services, ministry programs, and events. Familiarity with church settings is not required and we encourage people from all backgrounds to apply!
Please note that we are based in Washington, DC, and will not provide relocation assistance for this position.
Key Responsibilities
Maintenance Support
- Perform basic maintenance tasks such as changing light bulbs and reporting issues
- Assist with repairs and preventative maintenance tasks
- Report any facility concerns promptly
FMX Work Order Support
- Receive and complete assigned work orders through the FMX system
- Provide updates on task completion status
- Ensure timely response to assigned requests
Grounds & Exterior Support
- Assist with maintaining outdoor areas, including trash pickup and general cleanliness
- Support seasonal tasks such as snow and ice removal as directed
- Assist with opening and closing buildings as scheduled
- Ensure spaces are secure and in good condition after use
- Provide general support to staff and ministry leaders as needed
Event Setup & Breakdown
- Assist with setting up and breaking down rooms for services, meetings, and events
- Arrange tables, chairs, and basic equipment according to instructions
- Reset rooms to the standard layout after use
Cleaning & Custodial Support
- Clean and maintain all interior spaces, including the sanctuary, parish hall, classrooms, offices, and restrooms
- Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, and sanitize surfaces regularly
- Empty trash and recycling throughout the building
- Restock cleaning supplies and restroom materials as needed
Qualifications & Expectations
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- Must have basic maintenance skills: HVAC, plumbing, drywall, carpentry, painting, flooring, basic electrical, and other general skills
- Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting up to 25-50 lbs
- Flexible schedule required for special events and church programming
- 3-5 years of custodial or facilities experience is preferred
- Strong reliability and attention to detail
