Job summary

Grand Street Settlement seeks a Maintenance worker to perform preventive and routine inspections, facilitate repairs, manage inventory, and uphold the facility's cleanliness at our Manhattan site.

The role requires a High School Diploma or GED, at least 1 year of facility maintenance experience, and willingness to work Monday–Friday, 6pm–10pm. OSHA/CPR certifications are preferred and safety is emphasized.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Perform repairs including minor electrical, plumbing, furniture and equipment work.
• Maintain supplies, tools and equipment for upkeep and maintenance.
• Clean and maintain facilities, indoors and outdoors, including floors and grounds.
• Adhere to safety procedures and report hazards promptly.

POSITION TITLE: Maintenance

DEPARTMENT: Youth Services

LOCATION(S): Manhattan - 56 Essex Street, New York, NY 10002

REPORTS TO: Program Director/Assistant Director

SALARY RANGE: $20/hr

DATE: September 2026 - June 2027

SCHEDULE: Monday-Friday 6pm - 10pm. Working schedules vary based on program needs.

JOB SUMMARY: Maintenance worker conducts preventive and routine inspections, facilitates repairs, manages inventory and is responsible for the general upkeep of the facility.

Education, Experience, And Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED required
• At least 1 year of experience in facility maintenance
• Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) certified preferred
• Valid CPR/AED and First Aid certification through recognized accrediting body preferred
• Ability to lift and carry objects weighing from 20 to 40 pounds.
• Ability to work occasionally in poor weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, or snow.

Pre-employment Requirements

• Candidate must successfully complete the following: NYSDOH Fingerprinting Screening, NYS Clearance Review Background Check, SEL, 3 Reference Checks, Physical w/updated TB test

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

• Work collaboratively with co-workers and cultivate a culture of professionalism and act as a role model for youth participants.

• Identify issues with equipment, machinery or building systems and determine the best course of action for repairs.
• Perform a variety of repairs, including minor electrical, plumbing, build furnitures and equipment and other related work.
• Maintain supplies, tools and equipment needed for upkeep, repairs and maintenance.
• Clean and maintain facilities including tasks like sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, scrubbing, buffing floors and landscaping.
• Clean and sanitize toilets, sinks, floors and other surfaces.
• Dust and polish furniture and metal work.
• Clean outdoor grounds, lots and green spaces and ensure that space is free of debris and hazardous items.
• Gather and dispose of garbage and waste materials, including separating items for recycling, if applicable.
• Adhere to safety procedures and follow safety rules and precautions when using cleaning chemicals and equipment.
• Observe and report any needed repairs, safety hazards and/or other conditions requiring outside services from NYCHA, vendors, or contractors.
• Clean, organize and maintain workspace and shared spaces throughout the facility.
• Coordinate community relations efforts and participate in outreach activities.
• Assist in the planning, organization and execution of community events.
• Other assignments as required by the program director.
