Job Summary/Basic Function
The Office of Residential Services is seeking a Part-Time Mailroom Clerk to support the daily operations of the residential mailroom. This position is responsible for receiving, sorting, and distributing mail and packages for Teachers College residents and guests, while providing excellent customer service and ensuring the accurate and timely handling of all deliveries.
Mail and Package Operations
- Sort and distribute mail to two residential buildings.
- Log all certified mail and parcels, utilizing a computerized tracking system.
- Notify residents of parcels and certified mail received via electronic package system with occasional email or telephone follow-up.
- Assist residents with retrieval of packages utilizing the computerized tracking system.
- Audit unclaimed parcels against package log routinely and follow up with residents as necessary.
- Update mailboxes during check-in, check-out, and room transfer periods.
- Maintain forwarding address records and forward mail in accordance with USPS policy.
- Return mail as deemed necessary and according to USPS policy.
- Follow up on mail-related issues or concerns with the post office, delivery company, and any other mail distributor, including on-campus offices and departments.
- Assist with inventory of mailroom supplies and submit requests, as necessary. Assist with maintaining mailroom files and records.
Guest/Conference Housing
- Assist guests with retrieval of luggage when the Office of Residential Services is closed.
- Receive and disseminate packages for individuals staying in Guest and Conference Housing.
- Issue guest passes and cards to residents according to Residential Services guidelines.
- Verifies to ensure all guest cards are accounted for, which may include resident follow-up.
- Requests guest card replacements as needed and maintains billing report.
General Office Operations
- Act as customer service representative for office.
- Check voicemail and email, and respond or refer accordingly.
- Assist individuals (in person, on the phone or via e-mail) with general inquiries.
- Assist with major departmental mailings.
- Notify appropriate personnel if computers, printers, phones, etc. are not functioning.
- Other related tasks as required by the Office of Residential Services staff.
Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum of a high school diploma.
- Experience using web applications, email, and word processing systems.
- Ability to perform data entry and information retrieval from computer database system.
- Willingness to work overtime as approved and needed by department.
- Ability to lift a minimum of 25 lbs.
- Ability to sort and distribute mail which may include the use of a step stool.
Preferred Qualifications
- 2 years experience in clerical work, including computer and word processing assignments.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Ability to relate cordially with faculty, students, staff and department personnel.
- Ability to work effectively with detailed assignments.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products.

$29.80/hr
