An experienced machinist who can independently machine parts through programming, setting up, editing, and operating CNC and manual machines. Responsibilities include maintaining quality and safety standards, keeping records, and maintaining equipment. The machinist performs a full range of tasks using independent judgment, familiar with Fanuc and Mazak controls, and able to move between work centers. The Gatan Machine Shop produces low-quantity, close-tolerance parts for scientific research, with sizes ranging from under .06" to 24". Collaboration with engineering is essential to improve machinability and reduce costs. Teamwork with programmers, engineers, and colleagues is required.

DAY LIGHT POSITION:

• Flexible daylight hours with a 3-hour start window
• Overtime and weekends are also available

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Program, set up, and operate lathes, milling machines, surface grinders, band saws, and other powered metalworking tools to produce parts to specified dimensions without supervision
• Troubleshoot problems as needed
• Produce work to close tolerances efficiently
• Provide leadership and guidance to less experienced machinists to upgrade their skills; mentor and assist in training lower-level CNC machinists
• Perform non-routine machine shop maintenance, repair, lubrication, and cleaning of machine tools
• Select cutting tools and adjust machine feeds and speeds as needed
• Develop and perform first and last part inspections and in-process inspections
• Identify root causes and implement corrective actions for quality issues
• Maintain a clean and organized work area following 5S principles and perform basic preventative maintenance
• Be adaptable to a changing work environment, managing competing demands and unexpected events

• Knowledge of geometric tolerance and true position
• Ability to complete projects efficiently and accurately
• Ability to follow directions from leads and supervisors
• Clear communication skills for interacting with co-workers and supervisors
• Teamwork skills and adaptability to diverse personalities and communication styles
• Willingness to take on new responsibilities and challenges
• Knowledge of 5S and lean manufacturing concepts, and ability to contribute to departmental goals

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

• High school diploma
• 8-10 years of CNC machining experience or equivalent education/experience
• Completion of a 4-year apprenticeship or a 2-year technical degree in Machine Tool Technology
