Job description

Job Title: Machinist

Under supervision, performs bench, general shop, and outside machinist work aboard the vessels and terminals of the Staten Island Ferry. Performs related work as required.

Examples of Typical Tasks:

1. Sets up and operates machine shop equipment such as engine lathes, shapers, milling machines, drill presses, and grinders. Uses machinist tools and instruments.
2. Inspects, overhauls, and repairs all types of main and auxiliary stationary power plants, marine propulsion systems, both in shop, on vessels, and in terminals.
3. Directs subordinates in maintenance and repair tasks.
4. Prepares reports, requisitions, and maintains records and inventories of supplies and materials.
5. Performs tasks in accordance with American Bureau of Shipping and US Coast Guard regulations.
6. May operate a motor vehicle.
7. Walks to and from machines and tool storage areas, climbs stairs, and navigates around objects.
8. Stands for extended periods while operating machinery.
9. Uses sight and hearing to avoid injury, reads small numbers and markings for precision, and lifts metal objects up to 60 pounds.
10. Works in areas that are dusty, dark, contain vehicle/engine exhaust gases, and have strong odors from grease, lubricants, and solvents.

Preferred Skills:

Experience in repairing, overhauling, and maintaining marine propulsion engines (Caterpillar, Detroit, Cummings, EMD diesel engines) rated at 1,000 HP or higher, and marine propulsion and hydraulic steering systems, including shafting, bearings, steering gears, and propeller systems.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Five years of full-time satisfactory experience as a machinist; or
• At least two and a half years of full-time experience as a machinist plus relevant training or experience to total five years, with six months credited per year of helper or apprentice experience, up to two and a half years.

Additional Requirements:

• Must be a permanent in-title candidate or have applied for Machinist Exam No. 3079.
• Valid NY State Motor Vehicle Driver License required, maintained during employment.
• Pass a drug screening and undergo random drug/alcohol testing.
• Must obtain and maintain TWIC within 30 days of employment, or already possess one.
