Job summary

Remington Arms is seeking a Machine Tool Operator to support manufacturing by supplying tooling and parts, setting up grinders, reading blueprints, and inspecting parts to exact specs. You will perform multiple grinding processes, ensure process conformance, and assist in shop duties under supervision.

You’ll work in an environment emphasizing safety, 5S, and continuous improvement, with opportunities for skill growth across polishing, honing, and inspection tasks.

  • Must not have any written disciplinary action in the past twelve months.
  • Must pass a written test with 85% or higher.
  • Must supply own hand tools.
  • Must be able to work independently without continual supervision.
  • Must have previous education or experience in machining or production machine operation.
  • Must not have any written disciplinary action regarding attendance in the past two years.
  • Must be able to read and interpret blueprints.
  • Must have good communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

  • Set up, operate, and maintain the Overbeck and CNC ID grinders.
  • Inspect and measure dimensions to exact tolerances using gauges and micrometers.
  • Prepare, stage, and manage grinding materials and supplies.
  • Assist in shop tasks as directed by supervisor.
  • Follow 5S, Kaizen, and safety initiatives.

Job description

Job Description This position supports manufacturing operations by supplying tooling and machine parts. Safely performs various phases of operations necessary to cut, shape, polish, size, or grind metal work pieces to precise dimensions and finishes. Machine Tool Operators may be trained in the following processes: Overbeck and CNC ID Grinding, Polishing, Surface Grinding, Bench Work, Internal Honing, Material Handling, Punch Blanks, EDM, and Inspection. Machine Tool Operators fill out appropriate paperwork, enters information concerning the product on the computer and moves to the next position on the Work Order Tracking System. Machine Tool Operators will also assist in shop duties/tasks with the guidance of the Technical Coordinator or machinist when needed.

This position starts at $33.56/hr with regular increases to $38.89/hr after 52 weeks.

Overbeck and CNC ID Grinding Sets up, maintains, and operates the Overbeck and CNC (Inside Diameter) grinders to grind cylindrical and tapered surfaces of rotating steel or carbide workpieces, such as dies and machine parts. Reviews blueprints and work orders to plan sequence of operations. Analyzes specifications and selects grinding wheels and mandrels of shape and grade to be used. Positions and secures workpiece on machine by selecting and using the proper collet or chuck for the workpiece. Attaches workpiece to collet or chuck and indicates before beginning the process to ensure concentricity. Inspects and measures dimensions to 0.0001” to verify conformance to specifications. Forms stones by hand or by using the IR grinder. Maintains inventory of all necessary grinding supplies. Informs machine shop coordinator when additional supplies are needed.

Punch Blank Cut-off: cuts punch blanks per job requests, de-burrs, boxes for heat treat. Maintains equipment, completes preventative maintenance associated with equipment and area, engaged in our 5’s, Kaizen, and Safety initiatives.

Polishing Sets up, maintains, and operates the polishing and lapping machines to size and polish workpieces. Reviews blueprints and work orders to plan sequence for sizing and polishing. Analyzes specifications and determines the correct stone, mandrel, or paste for the job. Cleans dies with acetone and Q-tips as needed. Pre-inspects and measures workpiece to ascertain the amount of stock to remove. Resurfaces and polishes bores and cavities of workpiece to the correct size, form, and angle. Inspects workpiece according to print specifications. Builds polishing sticks and fixtures as required. Checks diameter and form on dies returned from production. Inspects and measures dimensions to 0.0001” to verify conformance to specifications.

Punch Blank Cut-off: cuts punch blanks per job requests, de-burrs, boxes for heat treat. Maintains equipment, completes preventative maintenance associated with equipment and area, engaged in our 5’s, Kaizen, and Safety initiatives.

Benchwork Manufacture spinners: part-off blanks with band saw, operate spinner cutting machine, and heat-treat spinners with torch. Inspect and polish multi-cup tooling. Chrome-plate various workpieces. Polish, de-burr, and radius new and rework tooling. Inspects and measures dimensions to 0.0001” to verify conformance to specifications. Operate and maintain distilling machine Operate and maintain sandblasting machine Punch Blank Cut-off: cuts punch blanks per job requests, de-burrs, boxes for heat treat. Assembles feed magazines used in Production Department Metal Parts areas per provided assembly prints. Repairs assembled feed magazines by inspecting, replacing worn and or damaged components. Cutting, shaping, and polishing magazine inserts as instructed and testing function of feed magazines. Maintains equipment, completes preventative maintenance associated with equipment and area, engaged in our 5’s, Kaizen, and Safety initiatives.

Hone Set up, maintains, and operates the Manual and Auto Honing equipment to size and polish the internal surfaces of workpieces to the correct finish and dimension. Reviews blueprints and work orders to verify sequence of operations. Analyzes specifications and selects honing stones and mandrels of proper grade and size to be used. Inspects and measures dimensions to 0.0001” to verify conformance to specifications. Maintains inventory of all necessary honing supplies. Informs machine shop coordinator when additional supplies are needed. Punch Blank Cut-off: cuts punch blanks per job requests, de-burrs, boxes for heat treat. Maintains equipment, completes preventative maintenance associated with equipment and area, engaged in our 5’s, Kaizen, and Safety initiatives.

Surface Grinding Sets up, maintains, and operates the surface grinders to grind surfaces of workpieces to the correct finish and dimensions. Reviews blueprints and work orders to plan sequence of operations. Analyzes specifications and selects grinding wheels and fixtures to be used. Dress, mount, balance, and true grinding wheels. Inspects and measures dimensions to 0.0001” to verify conformance to specifications. Maintains inventory of all necessary grinding supplies. Informs machine shop coordinator when additional supplies are needed. Punch Blank Cut-off: cuts punch blanks per job requests, de-burrs, boxes for heat treat. Maintains equipment, completes preventative maintenance associated with equipment and area, engaged in our 5’s, Kaizen, and Safety initiatives.

EDM (Electrical Discharge Machines), Benchman, CNC Lathe (used to manufacture trodes only) Sets up and operates EDMs (Electrical Discharge Machines). Download programs to machines and verify to standard. Reviews work orders, burn-sheet, program, and blueprints of product to plan operations. Positions and secures electrode in holder, verifying concentricity, alignment, and depth, using dial indicators and calipers. Inspects completed workpiece visually and measures dimensions of workpiece to verify conformance to specifications using measuring instruments such as hole gauges, micrometers, calipers, and optical comparators. Builds electrodes on the CNC lathe as needed. Measures and checks against print, visually inspects, correctly marks, and stores completed electrodes. Maintains inventory of raw materials, blanks, oils, and supplies for building finished parts. Requests additional supplies as needed. Maintains equipment, completes preventative maintenance associated with equipment and area, engaged in our 5’s, Kaizen, and Safety initiatives. Secondary Cleans area by keeping tools picked up and organized. Cleans machines, sweeps and mops as needed. Wipes up grease and spills as needed. Performs any other duties as assigned. Maintain 5-S.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must be able to understand English.
  • Must be able to read, write, and perform math calculations and be able to recognize improbable results.
  • Must not have any written disciplinary action in the past twelve months.
  • Must pass written test with a 85% or higher to be considered for an interview.
  • Re-testing is optional if you have received a passing score within the last year.
  • Must have good housekeeping and organizational skills.
  • Must supply own hand tools (list will be provided by machine shop leadership).
  • Must have the ability to work independently without continual supervision.
  • Must have previous education or experience in machining or production machine operation.
  • Must not have any written disciplinary action regarding attendance in the past two years.
  • Must be able to use measuring devices to the nearest 0.0001”.
  • Must be able to read and interpret blueprints.
  • Must have good communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

Work Environment: Employee work assignments may include tasks working with and/or exposure to potentially hazardous areas, including flammables and explosives. Safety training is provided to all employees to ensure compliance with company and federal regulations.

Pay Range: Hourly Rate: $31.63 - $36.66 The actual annual salary offered to a candidate will be based on variables including experience, geographic location, education, and skills/achievements, and will be mutually agreed upon at the time of offer.
