Job Description

The Machine shop Supervisor is responsible for directing a small team of associates in the areas of metal fabrication and CNC production. The successful candidate should have a minimum of 5 years’ hands-on experience within a machine shop environment as well as supervisory experience. The position will require competencies that include interpersonal skills, collaborative and strategic leadership with an understanding of all production support operations. A sound understanding of manufacturing principles, particularly Lean manufacturing.

Job Responsibilities & Requirements

The Company: The company is a $2.5 billion manufacturer of building products and industrial equipment headquartered in the Midwest. This plant of roughly 185,000 sq. ft. is in a suburb of St. Louis and produces automated manufacturing equipment for the prefabrication of wall panels, floor & roof truss assembly.

The Position: Production Area Supervisor – Machining

Reports to: Plant Manager

Supervises: Production staff of 15 -20

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Lead a team of people in execution of daily production tasks, training, and continuous improvement.
  • Perform problem-solving to develop corrective actions for identified issues.
  • Ability to work with micrometers, calipers, and other precision measuring devices.
  • Collaborate with plant leaders to assure adequate staffing of production area.
  • Read and understand engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Coordinate tooling and equipment availability, repair, and maintenance.
  • Assure timely identification and resolution of issues impacting production.
  • Establish or adjust work procedures to meet shipping schedules.
  • Ensure cleanliness and maintain a safe work environment.
  • Maintain positive employee relations and adhere to Company policies, safety standards, and good housekeeping practices.
  • Partner with other departments to resolve issues.
  • Work with local manufacturing engineering group to implement efficient and effective Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) that production employees are trained against.
  • Attendance at work during the regularly scheduled shift is an essential duty.
  • Ability to work overtime as required and perform other duties as required.

Education:

  • High school diploma: Required. Associates/Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience) preferred.

Experience:

  • Must be proficient in MS Office.
  • Must possess strong leadership and managerial skills.
  • 5 years hands-on work experience in applicable manufacturing process.
  • Experience with CNC setup, adjustments, and tooling changeover.
  • Experience reading and editing G Code Programming.
  • Experience with quality control of parts and working with tight tolerances.
  • Ability to create and follow schedules and meet production targets.
  • Organization skills and willingness to assume accountability for plant practices required.
  • Continuous Improvement experience within a manufacturing environment.
