Qualifications

• Be board-certified or board-eligible in Thoracic Surgery by ABTS and eligible for GA licensure.
• Completed an accredited cardiothoracic surgery residency with emphasis on lung transplantation.
• Demonstrate excellent clinical judgment, technical skills, and patient-centered care.
• Strong interpersonal skills and commitment to multidisciplinary teamwork.
• Active interest in academic surgery through research, education and scholarly activity.
• Experience in adult lung transplantation and donor procurement preferred.

Responsibilities

• Participate in all aspects of adult lung transplantation.
• Manage lung transplant patients in inpatient and outpatient settings at Emory University Hospital.
• Engage in donor procurement and organ recovery activities as needed.
• Share call responsibilities for lung transplantation.
• Collaborate with Surgical/Medical Directors to grow the program.
• Work with pulmonary medicine, critical care, anesthesia, infectious disease, perfusion, and transplant team.
• Contribute to quality, outcomes and cost-effectiveness initiatives.
• Support outreach to referring providers and national program visibility.
• Assist in development/implementation of new lung transplantation products and programs.
• Support evaluation of clinical practices and program services.

Education

Board-certified/board-eligible in Thoracic Surgery (ABTS)

Unrestricted medical licensure in Georgia

Accredited cardiothoracic surgery residency

Advanced training/experience in lung transplantation

Lung Transplant Surgeon

Emory Lung Transplant Program | Emory University School of Medicine

The Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Emory University School of Medicine is seeking a board-certified or board-eligible Lung Transplant Surgeon to join the Emory Lung Transplant Program.

This faculty position offers an outstanding opportunity to join a growing academic lung transplant program. The successful candidate will become an integral member of a multidisciplinary team dedicated to caring for patients with end-stage lung disease.

The position includes an appointment in the Department of Surgery, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, and membership in The Emory Clinic. The Lung Transplant Surgeon will report to the Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery and the Section Chief of Thoracic Transplant and MCS.

Position Overview

The primary focus of this position will be clinical excellence, academic scholarship, education, and innovation within lung transplantation.

Emory's expanding lung transplant program is experiencing continued growth in clinical volume and complexity, creating an exciting opportunity for an exceptional surgeon to contribute to the continued expansion of Emory's lung transplant services.

Clinical Responsibilities

• Participate in all aspects of adult lung transplantation.

• Provide surgical management and clinical care for lung transplant patients through an active inpatient and outpatient practice based primarily at Emory University Hospital.

• Participate in donor procurement and organ recovery activities as required.

• Participate in shared call responsibilities for lung transplantation.

• Collaborate closely with the Surgical Director and Medical Director of the Lung Transplant Program to support continued growth and development of the program.

• Collaborate with pulmonary medicine, critical care, anesthesia, infectious disease, perfusion, advanced practice providers, transplant coordinators, and other members of the multidisciplinary transplant team.

• Contribute to quality improvement and patient safety initiatives, including efforts to improve quality, efficiency, utilization, risk management, cost effectiveness, and infection control.

• Participate in outreach efforts with the referring provider community and support national program awareness through conferences and healthcare publications.

• Participate in the development, evaluation, selection, and implementation of new products, procedures, and programs related to lung transplantation.

• Support continued evaluation of clinical practices and program services for medical effectiveness, quality, and cost effectiveness.

Academic Responsibilities

• Educate and mentor general surgery and thoracic surgery residents, fellows, medical students, and other trainees.

• Participate in clinical, outcomes, translational, and investigator-initiated research related to lung transplantation.

• Contribute to clinical trials and the development and refinement of innovative strategies in lung transplantation in collaboration with industry, academic, and government partners.

• Present scholarly work and support national program visibility through regional, national, and international meetings and publications.

• Collaborate across Emory University to advance innovation, research, and academic scholarship in lung transplantation.

Qualifications

Candidates must:

• Be board-certified or board-eligible in Thoracic Surgery by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery (ABTS).

• Be eligible for unrestricted medical licensure in the State of Georgia.

• Have completed an accredited cardiothoracic surgery residency.

• Demonstrate advanced training and experience in lung transplantation.

• Demonstrate excellence in clinical judgment, technical skills, and patient-centered care.

• Possess outstanding interpersonal and communication skills and a commitment to multidisciplinary teamwork.

• Demonstrate an interest in academic surgery through research, education, and scholarly activity.
