Qualifications

• Board-certified or board-eligible in Thoracic Surgery (ABTS).
• Eligible for unrestricted licensure in Georgia.
• Completed accredited cardiothoracic surgery residency.
• Advanced fellowship training in heart transplantation and mechanical circulatory support, or equivalent experience.
• Excellence in clinical judgment, technical skills, and patient-centered care.

Responsibilities

• Participate in all aspects of adult heart transplantation.
• Perform heart transplantation and donor procurement procedures.
• Perform durable ventricular assist device (VAD) implantation and management.
• Participate in temporary mechanical circulatory support procedures (ECMO and short-term devices).
• Evaluate and manage advanced heart failure patients for transplant or MCS.
• Provide inpatient and outpatient care for transplant recipients and MCS patients.
• Participate in donor recovery activities as required.
• Collaborate with heart failure cardiologists, transplant coordinators, ICU staff, and perfusionists.
• Contribute to transplant outcomes quality improvement.
• Educate residents, fellows, and medical students.

Heart Transplantation and Mechanical Circulatory Support

The Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Emory University School of Medicine is seeking a board-certified or board-eligible Heart Transplant Surgeon to join the internationally recognized Emory Heart & Vascular Center.

This faculty position offers an outstanding opportunity to join one of the nation's highest-volume heart transplant and mechanical circulatory support programs. The successful candidate will become an integral member of a multidisciplinary team dedicated to caring for patients with advanced heart failure and end-stage cardiac disease.

The position includes an appointment in the Department of Surgery, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, and membership in The Emory Clinic.

Position Overview

The primary focus of this position will be clinical excellence, academic scholarship, education, and innovation within heart transplantation, advanced heart failure surgery, and mechanical circulatory support.

Emory's expanding transplant program is experiencing significant growth in clinical volume and complexity, creating an exciting opportunity for an exceptional surgeon to contribute to one of the nation's leading academic transplant centers.

Clinical Responsibilities

• Participate in all aspects of adult heart transplantation.

• Perform heart transplantation and donor procurement procedures.

• Perform durable ventricular assist device (VAD) implantation and management.

• Participate in temporary mechanical circulatory support procedures, including ECMO and short-term assist devices.

• Evaluate and manage patients with advanced heart failure requiring transplantation or mechanical circulatory support.

• Provide inpatient and outpatient care for heart transplant recipients and patients supported with mechanical circulatory devices.

• Participate in shared call responsibilities for heart transplantation and mechanical circulatory support.

• Collaborate closely with heart failure cardiologists, transplant coordinators, critical care specialists, anesthesiologists, perfusionists, infectious disease specialists, and advanced practice providers.

• Contribute to quality improvement initiatives and continued optimization of transplant outcomes.

• Participate in donor recovery activities as required.

Academic Responsibilities

• Educate and mentor cardiothoracic surgery residents, fellows, medical students, and other trainees.

• Participate in clinical, outcomes, translational, and investigator-initiated research.

• Contribute to clinical trials focused on heart transplantation, advanced heart failure, ECMO, and mechanical circulatory support and graft preservation systems.

• Present scholarly work at regional, national, and international meetings.

• Collaborate across Emory University to advance innovation and research in transplantation and advanced heart failure.

Qualifications

Candidates must:

• Be board-certified or board-eligible in Thoracic Surgery by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery (ABTS).

• Be eligible for unrestricted medical licensure in the State of Georgia.

• Have completed an accredited cardiothoracic surgery residency.

• Have completed advanced fellowship training in heart transplantation and mechanical circulatory support, or possess equivalent experience.

• Demonstrate excellence in clinical judgment, technical skills, and patient-centered care.

• Possess outstanding interpersonal and communication skills and a commitment to multidisciplinary teamwork.

• Demonstrate an interest in academic surgery through research, education, and scholarly activity.
