Mountain Views Supervisory Union (MVSU) is seeking an enthusiastic, caring, and dependable Long-Term Substitute Elementary Physical Education Teacher to provide high-quality physical education instruction during an extended teacher absence.

We're looking for someone who can step into an established program, build positive relationships with students, and provide engaging, inclusive physical education experiences that help elementary students develop movement skills, confidence, teamwork, and healthy habits.

About the Role

As a Long-Term Substitute Physical Education Teacher, you’ll provide developmentally appropriate instruction to elementary students across grade levels while maintaining the routines, expectations, and continuity of the school’s physical education program.

The successful candidate will create a safe, welcoming, and active learning environment where students of all abilities can participate, develop new skills, and experience success.

Essential Responsibilities

Planning & Instruction

• Plan and deliver engaging, developmentally appropriate physical education lessons aligned with established curriculum and applicable Vermont standards.

• Teach fundamental movement and motor skills, fitness concepts, teamwork, sportsmanship, and healthy habits.

• Provide clear demonstrations, directions, expectations, and constructive feedback.

• Engage students in a variety of individual, partner, team, recreational, and fitness activities.

• Differentiate and adapt activities to support students with a wide range of abilities and needs.

• Use appropriate assessment and observation to monitor student participation, skill development, and progress.

• Maintain continuity with the established physical education program throughout the assignment.

The Learning Environment

• Create a positive and inclusive environment where all students feel safe, respected, and encouraged to participate.

• Establish and maintain clear routines and expectations that support student safety and maximize active learning time.

• Promote teamwork, cooperation, sportsmanship, perseverance, and respect for others.

• Encourage students to build confidence, try new activities, and develop a positive relationship with physical activity.

• Adapt activities, instruction, and equipment as needed to provide meaningful opportunities for all students.

Professional Responsibilities

• Build positive and professional relationships with students, staff, and families.

• Collaborate with classroom teachers, Special Educators, related service providers, paraeducators, and other school staff to support student needs.

• Maintain physical education equipment and instructional spaces in a safe and organized manner.

• Follow appropriate safety practices and school procedures during all activities.

• Complete required student records, assessments, and other documentation associated with the assignment.

• Participate in required meetings, trainings, and professional activities during the term of the assignment.

• Supervise students as assigned.

• Uphold professional standards and model respectful, responsible, and healthy behavior.

• Carry out additional responsibilities associated with the assignment as directed by the Principal.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree.

• Education, training, or experience in physical education, exercise science, kinesiology, recreation, education, or a related field preferred.

• Experience working with elementary-aged children strongly preferred.

• Knowledge of developmentally appropriate movement activities, fitness concepts, and physical education practices.

• Ability to provide inclusive instruction for students with varying abilities and needs.

• Strong communication, collaboration, organization, and student-management skills.

• Ability to create a safe, positive, and engaging environment for active learning.

Licensure & Certification

• Vermont Educator License with a Physical Education endorsement required.

• Must successfully complete required criminal background checks.
