Job Description
The Log Auditor is responsible for examining and processing drivers’ daily logs and records to ensure compliance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (part 395). Daily responsibilities for this role include tracking driver violations and providing reports to Compliance Managers. Exceptional interpersonal skills, strong attention to detail and foundational knowledge of DOT/FMCSA compliance will prepare you for success in this role.
Essential Job Functions
ELD Auditing.The primary purpose of this position is to ensure compliance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Hours of Service Regulations, Title 49, Subtitle B, Chapter III, Subchapter B, Part 395. To ensure compliance, this position is responsible for auditing (1) 10% of randomly selected active drivers per month, (2) drivers with more than 1 violation in a 7 day period, and (3) drivers who undergo a roadside inspection and receive an Hours of Service violation in the following areas:
1. Federal Hours of Service (11, 14, 8/70, 30-minute break, adverse driving conditions). (Section 395.3)
2. Form and Manner (Incorrect trailer number, TDS number or failing to list a co-driver)
3. False Logs (Falsifying/changing time to appear compliant)
4. Certification
ELD Supporting Documentation. ELD violations will be audited against supporting paperwork as set forth in Section 395.11:
1. Trip Paperwork. Randomly select drivers and verify the driver is logging a minimum of 15 minutes for loading and unloading and that the ELD matches the times reported on the trip paperwork.
2. Fuel Receipts. Verify that the selected driver has logged a minimum of 5 minutes on duty time when fueling.
3. DOT Roadside Inspections. Ensure all drivers log on duty time for roadside inspections.
4. Trailer/BOL. Ensure all drivers enter the trailer number and Trip Data Sheet Number on the ELD.
ELD Audit Results.Input results into the Driver’s Hours of Service Scorecard. Contact drivers with feedback and to discuss results, both positive and negative. Calculate monthly LGT’s safety rating and distribute to Owner, Safety Director, and Managers.
Uncertified Logs.Review uncertified logs daily. Inactivate managers and drivers on short term and/or long term disability. Send list of uncertified logs to dispatch so they can call drivers on their shift regarding uncertified logs.
Corrective Actions.Provide corrective action based on LGT’s Hours of Service Policy.
Personal Conveyance.Provide a daily report of all personal conveyance violations greater than 50 miles to managers for corrective action. Investigate the reason for personal conveyance, and that such usage is in accordance with FMCSA regulations and LGT’s HOS Policy. Remove driver’s ability to utilize personal conveyance in accordance with LGT HOS Policy guidelines.
Unidentified Driver.Run an unidentified driver report in Peoplenet daily and correctly assign it to the driver it belongs to in accordance with LGT HOS Policy.
ELD Exemptions.Provide daily report of the number of miles used under various FMCSA exemptions, (i.e. the agriculture exemption and Texas exemption). Remove driver’s ability to utilize ELD Exemptions in accordance with LGT HOS Policy guidelines.
ELD Malfunctions. Report ELD malfunctions to upper management and track the repair of the malfunctioning device. Advise the Safety Director when the malfunctioning unit is approaching the 7-day threshold so that the Safety Director can shut down the unit until repairs are completed.
ELD Corrections.Pull daily report of violations, make corrections where possible and send to the driver for certification. Enter uncorrected violations on the Driver’s Hours of Service Scorecard.
ELD Training.Train new drivers on the use of the ELD during orientation and assist drivers with log corrections. ELD training involves instructing drivers on how to log in and out, change duty status, use special driving categories, update information, make annotations, determine available driving and on-duty time, determine malfunctions and transfer data to a roadside inspector. Training also includes review of the Hours of Service Policy, where to locate the ELD Information packet and where to keep 8 days of paper logs.
Paper Logs.Obtain copies of any paper logs and maintain them for the requisite six-month retention period. Ensure all drivers always have 8 days of blank paper logs with them.
Other Duties.The responsibilities set forth above are not all inclusive. This position reports to the Safety Director and will perform other duties as assigned. Some examples include:
