Job summary

Progress Rail, A Caterpillar Company, is seeking a Weekend shift supervisor in Mayfield, KY, to oversee the locomotive shop operations. You will lead a production team, schedule tasks, ensure safe and efficient workflows, and drive quality and on-time delivery while maintaining a compliance-focused environment.

The role requires 3–5+ years of lead experience in a machine tool setting, strong communication skills, and a solid understanding of lean manufacturing and safety procedures.

Qualifications

  • 3–5+ years leading in a machine tool environment or manufacturing setting.
  • Supervisory or managerial experience.
  • Ability to read blueprints and technical drawings.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

Job Purpose

Weekend shift supervisor will oversee day-to-day operation and movement of the shop in the locomotive department. Supervises team of production workers, ensuring manufacturing processes are being completed safely, efficiently, and with quality in mind. Communicates job expectations and ensures procedures are followed to meet demand schedules. Work schedule is Thursday 11am - 4pm, Friday-Sunday, 6am - 6pm.

  • Issues corrective guidance and/or disciplinary actions when warranted/needed;
  • Maintains team files for employee safety certifications, performance reviews and disciplinary documentation;
  • Performs SBA Audits, 5S Audits, LPA Audits, CAPA, and coordinates manpower and safety meetings to ensure compliance;
  • Performs all aspects of timekeeping duties, such as vacation, PTO, scheduled hours worked and overtime approval;
  • Determines overtime needs, determines priorities when resources are limited;
  • Suggests changes in working conditions and use of equipment to maximize efficiency;
  • Performs additional job‑related duties as assigned.
Education / Training
  • Some college/associates degree preferred, but not required; may be offset by experience.
Qualifications And Experience
  • Requires a thorough knowledge of production shop floor, including machine shop operations, equipment, and processes, plus familiarity with materials and quality objectives;
  • 3-5+ years of experience working as a lead in a machine tool environment; supervisory or management experience in a manufacturing environment;
  • Supervisor and/or Manager training; ability to work together in a team environment; ability to manage a diverse workforce; understanding of how to adjust build schedules and flex personnel as needed throughout the business day; understanding of HR policies and how to apply them in certain situations;
  • Knowledge of establishing and maintaining a safe work environment; strong focus and prioritization on team safety;
  • Training in Lean Manufacturing and Auditing preferred;
  • Ability to read precision instruments and gauges; ability to work from blueprints and technical drawings;
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral;
  • Basic computer knowledge and skills to understand systematic work;
  • Understanding of company policies and documentation use and storage.
Essential And Physical Activities Functions
  • Strength – Position typically involves oversight in an industrial environment. Frequent standing, sitting, and walking. Occasional light to medium-level lifting (up to 30 pounds);
  • Motion – Position regularly requires standard motions associated with leading and demonstrating. Frequent reaching, handling, grasping, carrying, pulling. Occasional stooping, kneeling, crouching;
  • Vision/Hearing Requirements – Constant verbal communications, including both talking and hearing;
  • Work Environment – Position is Safety Sensitive and will require the use of Personal Protective Equipment. Position may involve work in a non-temperature-controlled environment. Position is located in an industrial environment, including occasional exposure to noise (85+ decibels), occasional exposure to temperature changes and/or extreme temperatures, heavy machinery, hazardous materials, and other hazardous working conditions;
  • Emotional Demands – High level of responsibility in a hazardous environment. Must be able to lead a diverse team in a production environment. Requires interpersonal skills while sustaining very high standards;
  • Safety – Position is Safety Sensitive and will require the use of Personal Protective Equipment.
