Job summary

Norfolk Southern invites applicants to join the Locomotive Electrician Trainee program. This hands-on, field-based role provides classroom instruction and on-the-job training to inspect, repair, and install locomotive electrical systems.

Trainees learn to work on diesel-electric locomotives across our network, with lodging provided during training and travel reimbursed per union agreement. Union membership is required within 60 days of seniority.

Qualifications

• Must have a high school diploma or GED.
• Ability to pass pre-employment drug and alcohol screening and physical standards.
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and perform heavy physical labor.

Responsibilities

• Ensure compliance with railroad rules, safety regulations, and federal standards.
• Wire, maintain, repair, rebuild, inspect, and install electrical equipment on diesel-electric locomotives.
• Read electrical prints and test circuits using multimeters and diagnostic tools.
• Diagnose and repair electrical malfunctions including charging issues and high/low voltage grounds.
• Operate locomotives within shop limits as required.
