Job summary

Norfolk Southern Corp. is seeking a Locomotive Electrician Trainee to begin a hands-on career in locomotive electrical maintenance, combining classroom instruction with on-the-job training in shops and yards.

You will learn to inspect, repair, and install electrical systems on diesel-electric locomotives, travel for training, and join a seniority-based union workforce. The program includes safety orientation and craft training, with lodging provided per union agreement.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• 18 years of age or older.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Ability to pass pre-employment drug and alcohol screening and physical standards.
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and perform heavy physical labor.
• Must pass a post-offer medical examination, including a drug test.

Responsibilities

• Ensure compliance with railroad rules, safety regulations, and federal standards.
• Wire, maintain, repair, rebuild, inspect, and install electrical equipment on locomotives.
• Read electrical prints, test circuits, and connections using multimeters, amp clamps, and other diagnostic tools.
• Diagnose and repair electrical malfunctions including charging issues and wheel slip.
• Operate locomotives within shop limits as required.
• Wear protective equipment and complete safety training.
