Job summary

King County seeks a journey-level Carpenter I to support locksmith-focused work across county facilities. You will install, maintain and repair commercial locks, door hardware, and related components, using both mechanical and electronic keying systems.

The role requires strong mechanical aptitude, customer service skills, and the ability to learn new locking systems and security technologies. Work involves documentation, collaboration with multiple trades, and duties at secure facilities.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a verifiable apprenticeship program or two years of journey-level carpenter experience.
  • Knowledge of construction terminology, basic mathematics, and safe work practices.
  • Demonstrated skill in the use and care of tools and equipment used in the trade.
  • Ability to troubleshoot mechanical problems and determine appropriate repair methods.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with other trades and customers.
  • Ability to use computers and mobile devices to document and track assigned work.

Responsibilities

  • Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair commercial locks, lock mechanisms, cylinders, cores, door closers, exit devices, and associated door hardware.
  • Rekey locks and perform keying work involving mechanical and electronic keying systems.
  • Support King County key-control processes, including key issuance, distribution, tracking, recordkeeping, and accountability.
  • Install and modify doors, frames, and associated hardware as needed for lock and security hardware installations.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical door and locking-system problems and determine appropriate repairs or replacement.
  • Install, maintain, and troubleshoot security-related door hardware and electronic locking components within the scope of the Carpenter I classification.
  • Use computer-based work-order, key-control, inventory, and tracking systems to document work and maintain accurate records.
  • Perform locksmith and door-hardware work in detention and other secure facilities.
  • Coordinate with electricians, security and access-control staff, other trades, vendors, customers, and facility personnel as needed.
  • Operate and maintain hand and power tools and equipment associated with locksmith and carpentry work.
  • Provide responsive customer service to King County customers and facility occupants.
  • Perform other Carpenter I duties and related work as assigned.
