Job description

The Locksmith is responsible for the installation, maintenance, repair, and replacement of mechanical and electronic locking systems across all County-owned facilities, including high-security environments such as the detention center. This position ensures the security and integrity of County buildings by maintaining effective access control systems, fabricating and managing keys, and addressing emergency lock and access issues. This class works independently, under limited supervision, reporting major activities through periodic meetings.

The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

  • Installs, maintains, repairs, and replaces mechanical and electronic locking systems, keys, and access control components for all County facilities, including high-security areas such as the Detention Center.
  • Fabricates and duplicates keys, including restricted or specialized keys, using key-cutting and key-coding equipment; maintains key records and ensures compliance with key control policies.
  • Diagnoses malfunctions in locks, door hardware, security devices, and related systems; determines appropriate repairs or replacements and performs necessary corrective work.
  • Installs and services electronic and mechanical door hardware such as panic bars, door closers, hinges, electric strikes, and magnetic locks to ensure secure operation of facility entry and egress points.
  • Responds to emergency calls related to security access, lockouts, broken locking mechanisms, and other urgent maintenance issues, including after-hours as needed.
  • Maintains and updates a comprehensive keying system and access logs for County facilities; ensures integrity of master key systems and restricted access protocols.
  • Collaborates with county departments and personnel to ensure all lock and security systems meet operational and safety standards.
  • Conducts routine inspections of locking systems in secure environments to ensure proper function and compliance with applicable safety and security regulations.
  • Recommends upgrades to locking mechanisms and security systems to enhance facility security; assists in planning and implementation of security hardware improvements.
  • Maintains inventory of locksmith tools, equipment, and supplies; ensures all equipment is used in accordance with safety standards and procedures.
  • Prepares reports and documentation related to work performed, key control, maintenance schedules, and incidents.
  • Performs related work as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
  • Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent supplemented by specialized courses/training equivalent to completion of one (1) year of college.
  • Over two years and up to and including four years of related experience.
  • State license in appropriate trade.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving history.
