Job summary

University of California Los Angeles is seeking an experienced locksmith to inspect, maintain, repair and install campus lock systems and related hardware. You will work from blueprints and instructions to modify and install master key systems, test installations and ensure secure, efficient operation of facilities.

The role requires journey-level expertise with mechanical locking devices, knowledge of low voltage controls, and the ability to respond to emergencies and after-hours calls.

Qualifications

  • Journey-level experience in installation, maintenance and repair of mechanical locking devices.
  • Experience maintaining master key systems and security-related hardware.
  • Ability to read specs and blueprints for lock systems and related hardware.
  • Knowledge of low voltage wiring plans and safe work practices in line with ADA/OSHA.

Position Summary

Inspect, maintain, repair, design, modify, and/or alter campus infrastructure to include all buildings, common areas, equipment and building systems, and ensure the efficient operation of the campus. Disassemble locks and repair or replace work tumblers or cylinder pins to change lock combination by using hand tools and special equipment. Cut new or duplicate keys using key cutting machine. Maintain and repair a broad range of hardware such as panic devices, locks and closers, power operated doors and their hydraulic or mechanical system and low voltage controls. Work in security issues relating to campus' lock/mechanical systems. Respond to trouble calls involving an emergency repair or replacement. Work from blueprints, drawings or oral instructions in the modification and installation of lock systems and related mechanical systems. Plan, install and document master key systems; install all types of building hardware; test installations to ensure it is working properly. Close out work orders; request tools and equipment; monitor inventory levels; discuss jobs with Lead Locksmith, Supervisor or Manager; provide direction to Facilities Workers or Facilities Mechanics; maintain accurate hours of jobs, set up or clean-up work site; return tools and equipment; follow established safety procedures at all times; respond to off-hour emergencies and overtime as required.

Qualifications
  • Journey-level Experience Demonstrated work experience in installation, maintenance & repair of mechanical/combination locking devices. Maintenance of master key systems that includes working within a journey-level capacity. (Required)
  • Working knowledge of materials, tools, and equipment related to locksmith trade as well as power operated doors, including hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical systems. (Required)
  • Ability to: prepare or interpret low voltage wiring plans; correctly and skillfully operate the various standard tools and equipment used by locksmiths (e.g., code cutters, Medeco duplicating machine, key de-coding machine, boring jigs, ramsets, jig saws, and porta-band saw); troubleshoot full range of institutional hardware for signs of deterioration, malfunction or need for adjustment. (Required)
  • Ability to: read, interpret and understand technical language in specifications, schematics and blueprints; maintain confidentiality of personnel and/or police actions, and confidentiality on security issues involving secured areas. (Required)
  • Skill in: modifying and/or adapting designs, procedures or methods to make necessary alterations and modifications; estimating material and labor requirements to accomplish tasks; adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing 4-digit numbers and fractions in order to calculate layouts and offsets, and provide accurate cost calculations. (Required)
  • Skill in: monitoring inventory levels to assure that materials and equipment used on a daily basis are available to subordinates; fabricating replacement parts, devising or changing combinations, troubleshooting inoperative locking systems to determine the cause of malfunction, and in neutralizing lockouts. (Required)
  • Ability to: establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with peers, subordinates, supervisors, administrators, customers, visitors and outside agencies; use oral communication skills to obtain or convey clear, concise and grammatically correct information. (Required)
  • Skill in writing simple English phrases using correct grammar and spelling to complete reports that are accurate and easy to comprehend. (Required)
  • Ability to: work independently and follow through on assignments; work overtime, various shifts, and weekends. (Required)
  • Working knowledge of: standard safe work practices; UBC, OSHA and ADA requirements as it relates to the function. (Required)
  • Ability to: recognize discrepancies of ADA and Fire/Life/Safety codes at each job and report to Lead/Manager; bend or stoop repeatedly or continually over time to remove and replace door locks; make skillful, controlled manipulations of small objects to assemble locking devices; make precise arm-hand positioning movements and maintain static arm-hand positions to operate hand drill; lift or carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs. (Required)
  • Working knowledge of master key coding systems and the construction, operation and functional characteristics of locking devices. (Required)
Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations
  • Other Type of Degree Completion of a recognized locksmith apprentice training program of at least three years duration, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. (Required)
  • Must possess, upon hire, and maintain a valid CA noncommercial Class C License in accordance with the California (CA) Department of Motor Vehicles. (Required)

  • Background Check: Continued employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory background investigation.
  • Age Requirement: Candidate(s) must be 18 years or older to be eligible to be hired.
  • Pre-Placement Physical: Employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory physical examination.
  • Driving Record: The position is subject to the California DMV "Pull Notice System" and continued employment is contingent upon proof of a satisfactory driving record.
