Job Summary


The Locksmith is responsible for performing skilled work involving the installation, maintenance, and repair of a wide variety of building lock systems, including cylindrical, unit, mortise, rim, and reload cylinders. The role also involves repairing and replacing panic hardware, door closers, desk locks, file cabinet locks, display case locks, electrified hardware and other container-type locking mechanisms.


The Locksmith cuts new and replacement keys, picks locks with lost or broken keys, and performs emergency lock repairs as needed. This position is also responsible for maintaining an adequate inventory of locksmith tools, supplies, and equipment; monitoring and reporting maintenance issues to appropriate personnel; managing and updating master key records and documentation software; and evaluating hardware to ensure compliance with security standards and state fire codes. The Locksmith performs additional related duties as assigned.


Responsibilities


Locksmith Access Technician I
Perform entry-level locksmith tasks and assist in resolving basic lock and key service requests. Help with campus-wide key and lock systems and card access. Assist in preparing resources and tools for routine tasks and participate in training to develop proficiency in the key and lock systems, card access and safety protocols. Maintain accurate records of preventative maintenance and repair schedules under supervision. Closely adhere to industry and university best practices and safety requirements.


Locksmith Access Technician II
Independently perform locksmith services and support advanced master key systems. Collaborate with campus departments to evaluate and implement key and lock systems and card access to meet University standards. Use test equipment to evaluate system functionality and troubleshoot issues. Provide recommendations for system improvements and ensure accurate documentation of maintenance activities. Closely adhere to industry and university best practices and safety requirements.


Locksmith Access Technician III
Manage complex locksmith tasks and lead the design, installation, and maintenance of complex master key systems and software. Select and procure system hardware and components to meet project schedules. Use advanced test equipment to analyze system performance and recommend improvements. Supervise programming ensuring all security protocols are operational. Train other technicians and operators, provide work direction, and oversee compliance with preventative maintenance schedules. Closely adhere to industry and university best practices and safety requirements.


Locksmith Access Technician IV
Lead the design, engineering, and management of campus-wide advanced master key systems and software. Work with Facilities Management, Campus Planning, Construction Management, Public Safety, Industry Partners and other departments to design and implement comprehensive master key systems meeting University and U.L. standards. Use advanced test equipment to analyze system performance and recommend improvements. Act as project leader, train technicians, provide technical guidance, and oversee daily operation and preventative maintenance schedules for all systems. Closely adhere to industry and university best practices and safety requirements.


Minimum Qualifications


Two years full-time general locksmithing experience or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); ability to understand the basic requirements of master keying systems; and ability to develop appropriate key codes to fit existing master key systems required. Experience with manual and computerized key record and filing systems; and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are also required. Dependent upon department of assignment, a valid Utah driver's license may be required. Graduation from an approved locksmithing school is preferred. This position has no responsibility for providing care to patients.

Locksmith Access Technician II: 1-2 years of experience in locksmithing or access control


Locksmith Access Technician III : 3-5 years of locksmith/access control experience


Locksmith Access Technician IV: 5+ years of professional locksmith and access control experience


• Two years of full-time general locksmith experience, or equivalent (one year of education may substitute for two years of related work experience).


• Strong understanding of master key system fundamentals, with the ability to develop key codes compatible with existing master key systems.


• Experience using both manual and computerized key record and filing systems.


• Demonstrated interpersonal and effective communication skills.


• Mechanically inclined and able to work collaboratively as part of a team.
