Backflip is seeking an Underwriter for our business-purpose Underwriting Team. Backflip originates real estate investment loans (not consumer loans). As an early hire, this individual will play a critical role in ensuring Backflip has a best-in-class underwriting operation that is compliant, borrower-friendly, detail oriented, operationally efficient and designed to scale. They will also play a key role in ensuring Backflip’s Culture continues to be enlivened in the operation.
This position is remote (U.S.) and a rare opportunity to get in on the ground floor (~60 person team) working directly with senior leaders in a well-capitalized startup with a great culture (Check out our recently announced $15M Series A).
What You’ll Do:
Underwrite short-term real estate investment loans by analyzing property-level data, borrower profiles, and investment strategies.
Collaborate closely with your loan pod to deliver an exceptional member experience while continuously improving our operations.
Serve as a subject matter expert in Backflip’s credit policy and underwriting guidelines, ensuring consistent and informed decision-making.
Review and approve title-related documents such as Title Commitments, Tax Certificates, and HOA documentation — determine required endorsements and identify unacceptable exceptions based on Backflip’s Credit Policy.
Evaluate entity documentation (Operating Agreements, Articles of Incorporation, EINs, etc.) to verify good standing, confirm signing authority, and ensure proper structure for real estate transactions.
Review borrower financials, including asset verification, credit reports, and background checks, to assess risk and compliance.
Approve insurance documentation (e.g., dwelling coverage, flood insurance, builder’s risk) to ensure adequate protection and compliance with lending requirements.
Reviewing and signing off on executed closing documents for accuracy and completeness.
Perform loan file reviews across multiple stages — including initial, final, and quality control reviews — while consistently meeting or exceeding service level expectations (SLAs).
Qualifications:
3+ years of mortgage underwriting experience, including short-term bridge loans or construction loans for LLC/corporate borrowers.
Knowledge of title commitments, asset verification, credit and insurance documentation, and LLC/entity structures for business purpose residential loans.
Have a passion for working in a small, collaborative team environment where communication and partnership are foundational to success.
Strong verbal and written communication with urgency and adaptability to various audiences.
Experience in residential real estate investing, fix-and-flip lending, property technology (PropTech), or financial technology (FinTech) is a plus.
Excellent multi-tasking, time management, prioritization, attention to detail, and computer skills (we use Slack, Notion, Google Workspace, Front, HubSpot, and more).
Self-motivated, coachable, collaborative, detail-oriented; takes ownership of work.
High integrity, dependable, accountable, humble, and respectful.
Comfortable in a small, relatively unstructured office environment (we are remote).
Basic investment knowledge (or willingness to learn) with math proficiency.

Compensation for this role includes a base salary ranging from $70,000 - $75,000 plus a monthly productivity bonus, and is based on a variety of factors including prior experience, geographic location, stock option grant, and other factors, and may fall outside of the stated range for certain candidates. In addition to a competitive market salary, Backflip employees receive equity stock options, paid health care, and a 401K + company match, among other industry-leading benefits.
