Job summary

CITGO Petroleum Corporation invites students to join a 12-week Mechanical Engineer internship at either Lemont, IL or Downers Grove, IL. You will assist senior engineers, perform basic research, and update engineering records while learning refinery safety practices.

The paid internship requires enrollment in an Electrical Engineering program, sophomore status, a 3.0+ GPA, and 40-hour weeks. Deadline to apply is September 30, 2026.

Qualifications

• Must be enrolled in an accredited Electrical Engineering bachelor’s degree program.
• At least sophomore status (completion of first year).
• GPA of 3.0 or above.
• Availability to work forty (40) hours per week for full 12 week program.
• Must have a valid driver's license.
• TWIC eligibility required by Maritime Transportation Security Act.

Job Summary

The Mechanical Engineer intern will provide assistance on various projects for either the Project Engineering or Reliability Department and will become familiar with the refinery organization and work processes while learning refinery safe work practice. The intern will work on various projects throughout the refinery under the direction of a more senior engineer. This position is a paid 12‑week summer internship. A presentation covering all aspects of the internship experience and accomplishments will be expected at the end of the term. Interns will be responsible for assisting with or performing engineering duties which may include: basic engineering research, supporting the development of various engineering packages, updating engineering records and various databases and provide technical assistance. This position is located on‑site in either Lemont, Illinois or Downers Grove, Illinois.

Pay Range: $26.16 - 34.85

Minimum Qualifications

• High School Diploma
• Must be enrolled in an accredited Electrical Engineering Bachelor Degree program
  • Must be at least a sophomore status in college (completion of freshman year)
• Must have overall GPA of 3.0 or above
• Availability to work forty (40) hours per week for full 12 week program
• Must have valid driver's license
• Candidate must posess strong analytical and communication skills and be able to work in a a team environment
• Transportation Worker Identification Creditential (TWIC) Eligibility
  • Eligibility Requirements: The Maritime Transportation Security Act requires all persons who will need unescorted access to a regulated facility to have a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC), issued in accordance with rules established by the United States Coast Guard and the Transportation Security Administration. Job Duties

Generate discipline-related work scopes and complete project documentation updates / review. Familiarize with CITGO Engineering practices by editing the engineering training manual and apply as necessary to perform assigned work tasks. Assist with the update / creation of equipment reliability and integrity plans. Review existing engineering documentation for completeness and consistency with current policies and procedures, including drawings and technical data. Complete update to documentation as necessary or assigned. Consult with Senior Project Engineers and Managers in the group, and complete site visits in support of ongoing engineering efforts. Site visits may include witnessing site activities and scoping / verification for projects.
