Job summary

Southwest Shipyard, LP in Channelview, TX is seeking a Deckhand to assist in waterfront operations and support the Boat Captain with deck duties, engine checks, housekeeping, and vessel appearance. The role involves securing lines and performing a range of duties under supervision.

Standard work schedule is 14 days on the boat and 7 days off, with semimonthly payroll. Must have at least 1 year in boat/shipyard operations, be proficient in English and hold or be eligible for a TWIC card.

Qualifications

• Must have a minimum of 1 year of experience in boat and shipyard operations.
• Must have good communication skills and follow directions.
• Must be proficient in English.
• Must have or be eligible for a TWIC card.
• Working knowledge of Shipyard operations, welding, carpentry & concrete operations.

Responsibilities

• Assist in the maintenance of the yard boats.
• Assist the Boat Captain in all shifting of barges.
• Maintain all boat apparatus: winches, cables, ropes.
• Loads and unloads materials from vessels/barges and docks/trucks.
• Cleans the deck of the vessel regularly and maintains equipment exposed to outside elements.
• Keeps deck clear of obstructions that may cause slips, falls, or otherwise be a safety hazard.
• Maintains the overall appearance of the vessel, ensuring that proper storage and housekeeping are observed.
• Understand and follow all company regulations and safety rules.
• Tie up the barges to the fixed structure onshore or other barges.
• Use appropriate ropes and procedures for tying.
• Contact the Boat Captain for situations requiring his involvement.
• Follow the instructions of the Boat Captain.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
