Job summary

American University is seeking a Resident Assistant (RA), a part‑time student staff member in Housing & Residence Life. The RA connects residents to resources, offers guidance for navigating college life, and helps create enriching living environments.

Reports to the Community Director and collaborates with desk assistants and Living Learning Communities. The position requires on‑campus living, evening/on‑call shifts, and participation in training and staff meetings.

Qualifications

• Must be enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student.
• Must maintain full-time enrollment within credit limits (12–17 undergrad; 9–12 grad).
• Must have completed at least one semester of full-time undergrad education by start.
• One semester living on campus; GPA at or above 2.5 (cumulative and term).
• Must attend orientation/session by December.

Responsibilities

• Foster an engaging floor environment to support social and academic growth.
• Plan and implement learning/engagement activities for residents.
• Advise residents and refer to campus resources for well-being.
• Maintain open communication with residents and staff; participate in on-call rotation.
• Complete required administrative tasks and incident reports as needed.
