Novus Executives seeks a Litigation Counsel to join its in-house team north of Houston. You will run your own caseload of environmental and commercial disputes, setting strategy and driving matters through to resolution.

Ideal candidates have 3+ years in civil disputes, strong courtroom experience, and the ability to explain legal risk in business terms within a large international legal function. Travel within the US is possible.

Litigation Counsel - Global Energy Major

Novus Executives is working with one of the world’s largest energy businesses on the appointment of a Litigation Counsel to join its in-house team north of Houston. This is a hands-on role for a litigator who wants to own cases from start to finish, rather than simply oversee them.

What the job involves

You will run your own caseload of disputes, mostly environmental and commercial claims, with the autonomy to set strategy and see matters through to resolution. Day to day, that means:

• Leading cases yourself, from early assessment and witness work through to depositions, court hearings, trial and appeal
• Steering external law firms on both approach and cost, and holding them to budget
• Drafting and refining court filings and key case papers
• Acting as a risk adviser to the business on incidents, contractual indemnities and insurance coverage questions
• Keeping senior lawyers and operational leaders updated on where each case stands and what comes next
• Working alongside the company’s deal and commercial lawyers, its legal operations team and paralegals, particularly on document disclosure

What they’re looking for

• A US-licensed litigator (Texas preferred) with three or more years’ experience focused almost entirely on civil disputes
• Real courtroom exposure, including trial work, and experience carrying weighty, complex matters
• Background in private practice, in-house or with a government agency
• A confident grasp of procedural and evidential rules
• Clear judgment, strong writing and the ability to explain legal risk in business terms
• Comfort working on your own initiative within a large, international legal function
• A strong academic record and flexibility to travel within the US occasionally
