Job summary

The New York City Comptroller’s Office is seeking an Agency Attorney to join the Bureau of Law and Adjustment (BLA). Reporting to a Senior Attorney, the role will evaluate, negotiate, and resolve personal injury, civil rights/police, labor and employment, and other tort claims against the City prior to litigation.

Qualifications

• Must be admitted to NY State Bar and have either 1 year of US legal experience after admission or 6 months as Agency Attorney Interne.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate, negotiate, and resolve tort claims against NYC prior to litigation.
• Approve or deny Law Department requests for settlement authority.
• Prepare memoranda evaluating liability, risk, and damages for settlement authority.
• Participate in settlement negotiations in state and federal courts and ADR forums.
• Attend 50-h hearings for high-profile and media-sensitive matters.
• Assist Senior Attorneys on intergovernmental risk management initiatives.
• Perform other related assignments and special projects.
