Job summary

The New York City Comptroller's Office seeks an Executive Agency Counsel to oversee pre-litigation settlement negotiations and litigation strategy for City claims. This senior role reports to the Deputy Director of Litigation and leads a team of attorneys within the Bureau of Law and Adjustment.

Responsibilities include negotiating settlements, preparing complex memoranda, and coordinating with leadership on staff management and day-to-day operations of the Litigation Unit.

Qualifications

• Admission to the New York State Bar and four years of recent full-time legal experience after admission.
• Eighteen months of supervisory experience over other attorneys or legal staff.
• Membership in good standing with the NYS Bar for the duration of employment.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate, negotiate, and resolve claims against the City before litigation.
• Approve or deny Law Department recommendations for settlement.
• Supervise junior attorneys and review written work.
• Prepare complex memoranda on pre-litigation and pending litigation for settlements.
• Participate in settlement negotiations in and out of court.
• Support the Director and Deputy Director in data analytics.
• Assist with managing staff assignments and day-to-day Litigation Unit operations.
• Perform other related assignments as directed.
