Job Summary

The Literacy Tutor provides targeted reading and literacy support to middle and high school students. The tutor will work primarily with students in small groups of approximately three students, providing focused instruction based on individual student needs.

The tutor will work especially with students who have significant literacy skill gaps and require intensive support. The school will provide training in research-based approaches to literacy instruction, including strategies designed to support students with the greatest reading and literacy knowledge and skills gaps.

The ideal candidate enjoys working with adolescents, can build positive relationships with students, and is able to provide structured, encouraging, and engaging literacy instruction.

This is a part-time position of approximately 10 hours per week during the school year. The position pays $40 per hour. The specific weekly schedule will be established based on student needs and the school's instructional schedule.

Essential Job Functions
  • Provide literacy instruction to students in small groups of approximately three students.
  • Support students in developing reading comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, and other foundational literacy skills.
  • Provide targeted instruction based on students' identified strengths and areas of need.
  • Work with students who demonstrate significant gaps in reading and literacy skills.
  • Implement research-based literacy strategies and interventions provided through school training and support.
  • Reinforce literacy skills and strategies taught in students' regular English/language arts classes.
  • Help students develop strategies for understanding increasingly complex texts.
  • Encourage students to become more confident and independent readers.
  • Modify instruction and activities based on students' progress and learning needs.
  • Work collaboratively with classroom teachers, special educators, intervention staff, and administrators.
  • Communicate regularly with appropriate school staff regarding student progress.
  • Maintain records of student participation, instructional focus, and progress.
  • Use school-provided assessment information and student work to help guide instruction.
  • Establish positive, respectful relationships with students.
  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries and student confidentiality.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • At least two years of prior professional experience working with adolescents.
  • Strong reading, writing, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with middle and high school students.
  • Ability to provide instruction and support to students with different academic needs and skill levels.
  • Willingness to learn and implement research-based literacy instructional practices.
  • Ability to participate in training and coaching provided by the school.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to develop positive relationships with students.
  • Dependability, organization, and the ability to work collaboratively with school staff.
  • Ability to pass CORI and National Criminal Background Check.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience providing tutoring, literacy intervention, academic support, or classroom instruction.
  • Experience working with middle and/or high school students in an educational setting.
  • Familiarity with reading intervention strategies and methods for supporting struggling readers.
