Responsibilities

• Evaluate all education coursework related to literacy to ensure alignment with Science of Reading competencies.
• Manage the 100-hour structured literacy observation placements at Local Education Agencies with LETRS-trained mentors.
• Serve as liaison to external stakeholders to coordinate statewide literacy initiatives.
• Track and analyze candidate literacy assessments and support reporting for funding and licensure eligibility.
• Teach education courses (up to 6 credit hours) each fall/spring as needed.
• Fulfill institutional service requirements by participating on committees as assigned.
• Assist the President by supporting College activities as needed.

TITLE: Literacy Coordinator

REPORTS TO: Director of Education Programs

SUMMARY

• The Literacy Coordinator is a faculty position tasked with ensuring that all courses in teacher licensure are aligned with the evidence-based pedagogical frameworks required for state licensure. This position will act as bridge between legislative requirements and the pedagogical changes in the NMJC Alternative Licensure Program. The Literacy Coordinator maintains consistent, high-quality implementation across the program by integrating state requirements with the academic curriculum.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

• Evaluate all education coursework related to literacy and clinical experiences to ensure components of the curriculum are explicitly aligned with Science of Reading competencies.
• Manage the required 100-hour structured literacy observation placements at Local Education Agencies to identify and coordinate with LETRS-trained mentor teachers to ensure candidates are immersed in high-fidelity environments.
• Serve as the liaison to external stakeholders to coordinate statewide literacy initiatives.
• Track and analyze candidate performance on literacy-related assessments by meeting implementation timelines, tracking anticipated deliverables, and facilitating state and accreditation reporting to ensure the program maintains continuous funding and licensure eligibility.
• Teach education courses (up to 6 credit hours) each fall/spring semester, as needed.
• Fulfill institutional service requirements by actively participating on working committees as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• A Master’s or Doctoral degree in education, literacy, or reading is required. All degrees must be from a regionally accredited institution.
• A minimum of five years of experience as a classroom teacher, reading specialist, or literacy coach is mandatory.
• Previous experience teaching education courses at the college level is preferred.
• The successful candidate must possess strong communication and organizational skills.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

• Specialized expertise in the Science of Reading and its instructional application, Structured Literacy. This includes profound technical knowledge of reading processes, phonology, orthography, and syntax.
• Understanding of principles of adult learning to lead faculty through the transition and provide professional development necessary to move faculty away from legacy instructional models toward evidence-based frameworks.
• Ability to collaborate across diverse and sometimes competing interests by using interpersonal skills to build consensus and ensure a unified approach to literacy preparation.
