Job summary

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) seeks a Linux Systems Engineer to expand the EMSL/Computing and Data Operations HPC infrastructure. You will manage Slurm clusters (Tahoma/Boreal), Warewulf provisioning, and on-site storage workflows for EMSL instruments.

The role emphasizes on-site hardware work, automation with Ansible, and collaboration with DevOps and research teams to improve performance and reliability of HPC systems.

Qualifications

• Degree in computer science or a related field.
• Strong Linux administration, tuning, and troubleshooting.
• Hands-on automation experience with Ansible (YAML, roles, playbooks).
• Experience with virtualization or cloud platforms (VirtualBox, Proxmox, AWS, Azure).
• Experience with HPC/storage systems such as Ceph, Lustre, BeeGFS, or HPSS.

Responsibilities

• Install, configure, and troubleshoot Linux servers across HPC clusters and EMSL infrastructure.
• Administer HPC cluster operations with Slurm and node provisioning.
• Develop automation using Ansible and CI/CD workflows.
• Support large-scale storage systems underpinning HPC data.
• Collaborate with DevOps and research teams to improve reliability and automation.
• Perform hands-on hardware work in the data center as needed.
