Job summary

Arista Networks is seeking a kernel software engineer to develop and maintain the Linux kernel within EOS, aligning with upstream kernel developments and integrating new versions. You will also evaluate CPUs and NICs with hardware teams, and contribute features to the mainline Linux kernel.

The role covers kernel feature work, debugging, and performance tuning, with ownership from design to deployment. You will mentor junior engineers and collaborate with customer support for network issues.

Qualifications

• BS Computer Science/Electrical Engineering/Computer Engineering with 3+ years experience, or MS with 2+ years, or PhD with 1+ year.
• Expert C programming; knowledge of C++ and Python desirable.
• Hands-on Linux kernel debugging, bug fixes, and feature development.
• Familiarity with Linux kernel architecture and upstream patching processes.
• Understanding of IP networking concepts and modern software practices.
• Ability to work independently and in small teams, with good communication.

Responsibilities

• Track Linux Kernel developments and identify features of interest for Arista.
• Develop and maintain EOS Kernel features and tests using C, C++, Python; build tests and infrastructure.
• Qualify new kernel-dependent hardware like CPUs and NICs with hardware engineers.
• Contribute features back to the Linux mainline with upstream community.
• Integrate new Kernel versions for EOS and internal development.
• Provide technical leadership across features, projects, and tools.
• Collaborate with Customer Support to diagnose and fix customer network issues.
• Mentor junior engineers in Arista's software development environment.
