Line Lead - Batter Line

Rice Lake, WI

About the role.

Under the supervision of the Production Supervisor, the Line Lead performs all work necessary to operate the battered onion lines following established standards, procedures and practices. The Line Lead ensures that the proper materials are used during the shift's production and makes necessary changes throughout the day. The Line Lead coordinates and reassigns staffing to maximize efficiencies as determined by the labor line-ups and raw material conditions for each product. The Line Lead completes daily paperwork in a timely and accurate manner. The Line Lead communicates with key personnel to ensure line optimization. This position directly monitors all direct labor assigned to production. This position supports Operations, Quality Control, Safety, and Finance.

What you’ll be doing.

DAILY PRODUCTION

  • Operate lines according to Standard Operating Procedures by products.
  • Utilize SPC (Statistical Process Control) procedures to reduce process flow variations.
  • Complete daily process logs in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Ensure that the correct materials are used.
  • Coordinate changeovers in an efficient manner.
  • Possess detailed knowledge of the products run on the assigned line.
  • Operate equipment as needed to meet quality, safety, and production standards.
  • Drain, sanitize and refill batter and breading equipment as required.
  • Dump breaders and batters in applicators during changeovers or as needed.
  • Make adjustments and perform minor maintenance work on equipment. Know when to involve maintenance.
  • Perform line cleaning and interval sanitation work as required.
  • Minimize downtime.
  • Work with the quality technician and onion preparers to maximize onion yield and line flow.
  • Communicate and coordinate work efforts with other plant personnel.
  • Report unusual conditions or problems to the production supervisor.

STAFFING

  • Ensure that the line is properly staffed using the labor line-up for each product as a guide.
  • Reassign employees to optimize line flow.
  • Make sound judgments in using backup positions.
  • Coach employees regarding work performance in a positive manner.
  • Keep shift supervisor aware of any performance or personnel issues that may be present on the shop floor.
  • Assist Production Supervisor with coaching sessions with employees as needed.
  • Coordinate staffing during overtime and low situations.

PAPERWORK

  • Complete paperwork on downtime and edits in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Complete daily process logs and input into programs for evaluation and analysis.
  • Assist trainers and Production Supervisor with evaluations of trainees.

MARGINAL DUTIES

  • Work on the line as time permits to provide stretch breaks.
  • Line Leads on day crew may be required to perform sanitation duties every other Sunday. See the sanitation job description for duties.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Requires three to six months of on the job training. No degree required. Computers skills a plus.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers, key personnel and management regarding the day's production and solving problems in a positive and courteous manner. Must maintain confidentiality of individual problems and work record information.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to do simple arithmetic; add, subtract, multiply, divide, percentages, and averages.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form. Ability to solve problems and make a determination on when to shut a line down.

LICENSE

A forklift license is preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and talk, hear, and taste. The employee frequently is required to walk, climb, kneel, crouch and reach above shoulders.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 60 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The Batter Line Lead is responsible for the production on either the C or D lines. There is generally one line lead per production line, with a total of 4 line leads per shift. The associate is responsible for the line operation from the Onion Preparation through to the Fryer area.
  • As the Line Lead the associate will be responsible for the production rate of the machines. The associate will perform various quality checks at scheduled intervals to check for ring thickness, coating percentage, temperatures, etc. The associate will also change the super sacks, add ingredients when needed, etc. The associate will work on the line to cover for breaks when needed as well as for other line lead. The associate is responsible for ensuring that line(s) are properly changed over if there is a product change with ingredient changes included. The associate is also responsible for changing the filter papers, emptying waste carts, etc. If the augers that feed the material to the machines go down the associate will also be responsible for manually feeding the raw material into the machines, which has occurred on an infrequent basis.
  • The associates are currently working 12 hour shifts with 3 breaks 3 days a week. If the associate is working the day shift he/she will be performing sanitation as one of the shifts every other week.

Sanitation physical demands: (Day Shift Only)

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance on ladders; stoop, kneel, sit, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to
  • 60 pounds to include the carriages for the batter machines or barrels of breading. The employee must regularly grasp with 50 pounds of force when using the high-pressure gun. The employee must occasionally push carts weighing up to 450 pounds with 30 pounds of force.

TOOLS/EQUIPMENT USED

The tools and equipment described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee would use the following tools and equipment; toolbox, wrench, ruler, viscosity cups, utility knives, hammer, stopwatch, computer, pen, radios, and high-pressure gun.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee works in the plant where the noise level is loud and would be exposed to wet, humid conditions, extreme hot and cold, and moving mechanical parts.

PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

Employees in this position are required to wear hearing protection, smocks, hair restraints, safety glasses, and slip resistant safety toed shoes.
