Job description

The Hanover Department of Public Works seeks qualified candidates for the position of Light or Heavy Equipment Operator. This is a full-time (40 hour/week) and benefits eligible position. If you do not currently hold a CDL, the Town of Hanover will assist you in obtaining certification if you are the right fit.

Responsibilities
  • Operating equipment to construct, improve and maintain roads and drainage systems.
  • Helping grade and set up base for new street construction and building sites.
  • Operating trucks to haul materials, plow snow, and clear ice from streets and sidewalks.
  • Assisting with installation and maintenance of storm drain systems.
  • Performing routine road maintenance.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Physical Demands/Work Environment

Duties typically involve standing, walking, crouching, bending, stooping, and lifting both light and heavy objects. A high degree of dexterity is needed to operate and maintain job-related tools and equipment. Use of safety and protective equipment is frequently required. Work is typically performed outdoors, at times in extreme cold, heat, and inclement weather.

Pay Range

Light Equipment Operator Pay Range: $22.46 - $33.54 (Labor Grade 11)

Heavy Equipment Operator Pay Range: $23.58 - $35.15 (Labor Grade 12)

Minimum Requirements
  • Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a driver's license valid in the State of New Hampshire for the type(s) of vehicle or equipment operated.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Knowledge of the techniques, equipment, and supplies used in street and drainage system construction and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of established safety policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the geography of the town, including street names and locations.
  • Skill in prioritizing and organizing work.
  • Skill in the operation and maintenance of specialized equipment, tools, and machinery, including an excavator, loader, bulldozer, backhoe, street sweeper, and dump truck.
  • Skill in the use of hand and power tools.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
