Job Overview

Light Duty Technician II – DOT Management Level, Individual Contributor

Compensation: Hourly base rate of $35.29 - $52.88 per hour (variable based on location and experience). Additional compensation may include commission, incentive programs, and other pay components.

Work: 100% on the road. Variable shift, flexible schedule. Remote work option available, but the candidate must reside in the specified city, state, or region.

Location: Cox Automotive, Cox Fleet – Indianapolis, IN (mobile work across the United States).

Responsibilities

Perform certified DOT inspections, preventative maintenance inspections, and light and follow‑up repairs on light and medium duty vehicles. Duties include troubleshooting and diagnosing mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and electronic systems, and performing related repairs.

  • Minor adjustment and repairs on truck equipment: electrical/brake/cooling systems, starters/alternators, fan clutches, engine electronics, power steering systems, engines (gas and diesel), transmissions (manual and automatic), clutches, differentials, air conditioning systems, and other related components.
  • Participate in regularly scheduled safety training and stay current on safety protocols and OSHA/EPA/DOT regulations.
  • Document work orders (RO) using company devices and proprietary application, including uploading pictures and parts used.
  • Communicate with management, team members, and dispatch via Microsoft Office products, email, or phone to obtain approvals, discuss repair estimates, and retrieve purchase order numbers.
  • Obtain parts from approved vendors and manage parts inventory on the company service truck.
  • Conduct independent completion of DOT forms and other required documentation promptly.
  • Plan, prioritize, and manage a daily schedule independently while providing excellent customer service to clients.
  • Adhere to all company policies, processes, and safety procedures.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED (preferred, but a related trade certification or higher degree is acceptable).
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in a related field; three (3) years of light and heavy duty experience preferred.
  • Possess a set of hand tools necessary for the job.
  • Must successfully complete and pass a DOT‑regulated pre‑employment background screening and DOT physical prior to employment.
  • Valid DOT medical card with at least four (4) months remaining or a current DOT physical if less than four months.
  • Must be at least 21 years old, hold a valid state driver’s license, and maintain a driver qualification file with a three (3) year MVR review.
  • Safe driving record required.
