Position Summary

The Lifeguard is responsible for ensuring the safety of all swimmers at the pool, monitoring the water and pool deck, and providing emergency responses as needed. This role involves leading water safety activities, assisting with special events, and maintaining communication with the lifeguard team to ensure consistent safety practices. The Lifeguard will also interact positively with pool members, help maintain the cleanliness and safety of the pool area, and be prepared to respond to emergencies, including rescues and first aid. The position requires strong swimming and lifeguarding skills, as well as the ability to follow safety procedures and protocols.

Major Accountabilities

  1. Monitor safety in the pool, on the pool deck, and in the pool area.
  2. Assist with events like "PoolPalooza" and "swim in movie night" for families and Girl Scouts.
  3. Lead water safety activities on days when swimming is not possible (e.g., lightning storms).
  4. Greet and interact with members at the pool; be positive, polite, and patient.
  5. Ensure swimmers are aware of safety practices, whistle signals, and procedures.
  6. Always wear a whistle on the pool deck and carry PPE as assigned.
  7. Help everyone when possible, but never stop scanning the water.
  8. Provide rescue and treatment for distressed or injured persons.
  9. Communicate with other lifeguards; practice drills for consistent rescue practices.
  10. Maintain basic physical upkeep of the pool area without interfering with water surveillance.
  11. Represent Girl Scouts positively to participants, staff, and other lifeguards.
  12. Notify supervisor early if unable to attend a shift to ensure coverage.

Requirements

  1. Current Lifeguarding certification (Pool, Aquatic Center, or Waterfront) with CPR for the Professional Rescuer, or ability to obtain certification.
  2. Current First Aid certification or ability to be certified.
  3. Ability to monitor swimmers visually, communicate effectively, and follow emergency procedures.
  4. Physical ability to swim 300 meters (crawl stroke with rotary breathing), tread water for 2 minutes, and retrieve a 10lb diving brick.
  5. Ability to swim 300 meters during team drills at least twice a week.
  6. Ability to lift more than 20 pounds routinely; up to 100 pounds in emergencies.
  7. Perform physical tasks in emergencies per certification, training, and pool procedures.

Skills and Competencies

  1. Must be at least 18 years old.
  2. Demonstrate competency in lifeguarding and swimming skills.

Education

  • High School graduate or equivalent preferred.

Certifications

  • Lifeguard certification, AED/CPR for the Professional Rescuer, and First Aid are required.
  • Water Safety Instructor certification is preferred.
