Qualifications

• Minimum age of 15 years old.
• YMCA-approved lifesaving certifications: CPR, AED, First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen administration.
• Current YMCA Lifeguard Certification or ARC Lifeguard Certification accepted.
• Child abuse prevention training within 30 days of hire date.
• Ability to maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness.
• Demonstrate lifeguard skills per YMCA standards.

Responsibilities

• Maintains active surveillance of the pool area.
• Reviews emergency procedures and responds immediately per YMCA policies.
• Maintains positive relationships with members, participants, and staff.
• Applies safety rules for the pool and aquatic area.
• Remains calm under pressure.
• Maintains accurate records as required by YMCA/health codes.
• Performs equipment checks and ensures needed equipment is available.
• Checks the pool for hazards on arrival.
• Performs chemical testing when not guarding.
• Attends staff meetings and in-service training.
• Responsible for appropriate child-adult ratios and group sizes.
• Assists in keeping deck and locker rooms clean.
• Opens and closes procedures and secures doors.
• Report to duty 10 minutes before shift and arrange substitute with proper notification.
• Other duties as assigned.
