Job summary

YMCA of Greater Charlotte is seeking a Lifeguard to ensure swimmer safety and respond to emergencies at our Charlotte aquatic facility. The role requires vigilance, strong communication, and the ability to act quickly in emergencies.

No experience? You can qualify by passing Lifeguard Certification within 30 days of hire; we cover lifeguard cert costs and offer a Free Y membership with employment. The position is part-time plus, with evenings, weekends, and holidays typical.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 16 years of age at time of application.
• Strong swimming ability and endurance for rescues and pool safety.
• Ability to stay alert in a fast-paced environment.
• Excellent communication and conflict resolution skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Comfort around water for extended periods.
• Understanding of water safety principles and lifeguard best practices.
• Remain calm and take decisive action in emergencies.
• Dependable and punctual with a focus on safety.
• Willingness to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends and holidays.
• Passion for safety, aquatics, and community engagement.
• Ability to pass Lifeguard Certification within 30 days (provided by the YMCA).
• Previous lifeguarding experience (preferred).
• Current lifeguarding certifications (preferred).
• Current First Aid and CPR certifications (preferred).

Responsibilities

• Monitor pool areas at all times to ensure safety.
• Enforce facility rules with a professional, welcoming attitude.
• Recognize and respond to emergencies quickly and effectively.
• Assist swimmers in distress and provide appropriate aid.
• Conduct routine safety checks of pool, equipment, and surroundings.
• Maintain accurate records of incidents and maintenance needs.
• Engage positively with members, guests, and staff, providing excellent service.
• Assist with pool cleanliness and chemical balance checks as directed.
• Support YMCA aquatic programs and events as needed.
• Uphold the YMCA’s mission and core values.
• Perform other duties as assigned by leadership.
