Lifeguard Captain

Under immediate supervision, performs lifeguard duties at a municipal beach or swimming pool. Teaches beginning and advanced swimming instruction. Monitors swimmers, provides emergency assistance when needed, and maintains the pool and surrounding area, including the filtration system. Transports youth and adults as required. Performs related duties as assigned.

Typical Tasks

1. Assists in patrolling and supervising swimming activities at public pools and beaches.
2. Rescues persons in danger of drowning.
3. Acts as a lookout at assigned stations.
4. Administers first aid in emergencies within a lifeguard's jurisdiction.
5. Patrols unguarded beach areas and checks for violations of regulations.
6. Enforces rules and regulations through disciplinary measures.
7. Conducts swimming lessons and assists with aquatic programs.
8. Removes debris and hazards from swimming areas.
9. Ropes off swimming areas and posts storm warnings.
10. Attends training sessions, staff meetings, and reports accidents and incidents.
11. Maintains and supervises lifesaving equipment.
12. Assists in locating, reporting, or restoring lost articles.
13. Handles issues arising from large crowds at beaches and pools.
14. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED.
• Two summers of experience in outdoor and indoor pools in a municipal setting.
• Current certifications in American Red Cross Lifeguarding, First Aid, and CPR for the Professional Rescuer.
• Valid Government ID (Ohio Driver’s License or State ID). (Note: Not required for those under 18 hired as Seasonal Lifeguards.)

Additional Duties

• Ensure patron safety by preventing and responding to emergencies.
• Administer First Aid/CPR/AED in emergencies.
• Follow aquatic and city regulations.
• Inspect aquatic areas for cleanliness and safety.
• Maintain aquatic records, reports, and statistics.
• Supervise and coordinate lifeguard staff.
• Perform maintenance of pool systems and cleaning.
• Prepare in-service training for staff.
• Maintain proper pool water chemistry levels.
• Assist with opening and closing procedures of pool facilities.
• Work hours are Monday – Friday (indoor) and Wednesday-Sunday (outdoor).
• Maintain current certifications in Lifeguarding, CPR, First Aid, and AED.
