Description

Embark on a Journey of Impactful Adventure

The lifeguard is responsible for the guarding and safety of members and program participants within all aquatic facilities. This role involves enforcing aquatic policies and procedures in compliance with regulations from the State of Pennsylvania, the YMCA of the USA, the YMCA of Greater Brandywine, Ellis and Associates (the lifeguard licensing agency), and YMCA insurance policies.

What You’ll Do
  • Actively scan assigned zones every 10 seconds, reaching the farthest point within 20 seconds
  • Perform thorough bottom scans during rotations
  • Position yourself to maximize visibility, avoiding glare and obstructions
  • Guard from elevated chairs or standing positions near the pool edge
  • Follow the “5 Minute Strategy” to change positions every five minutes
  • Remain vigilant and never leave the pool unguarded
  • Be “Rescue Ready” at all times with rescue equipment and whistle
  • Participate in drills and respond as if in a real emergency
  • Close pool if unsafe conditions arise and follow lightning policies
  • Communicate professionally with members
  • Swim test and monitor children according to protocols
  • Enforce pool rules courteously and fairly
  • Assist in maintaining cleanliness and perform additional duties as assigned
  • Follow scanning zone rotation and break policies, avoiding cell phone use during active guarding
  • Ensure compliance with all policies and procedures
Qualifications
  • Must be 15 years or older
  • Current Ellis & Associates lifeguard certification or equivalent
  • CPR for Professional Rescuers, First Aid, AED, Oxygen, and Bloodborne Pathogens certifications
  • Complete monthly in-service training
  • Obtain and maintain all certifications within 90 days of hire
Work Conditions and Physical Demands

Requires frequent sitting, reaching, and movement; occasional lifting up to 10 pounds; ability to communicate effectively; normal noise levels. Reasonable accommodations available for disabilities.
