The lifeguard is responsible for the guarding and safety of members and program participants within all aquatic facilities. This role will be responsible for carrying out and enforcing aquatic policies and procedures in compliance with statutes as described by the State of Pennsylvania, the YMCA of the USA, the YMCA of Greater Brandywine, lifeguard licensing agency Ellis and Associates, and YMCA insurance representatives.

What You’ll Do

• Actively scan the assigned zone every 10 seconds and reach the farthest point within another 20 seconds.
• Perform profound bottom scans of your zones during rotations.
• Position yourself to avoid glare, building components, or floating structures obstructing your view.
• Guard from elevated chairs or standing/patrolling near the pool edge.
• Change body position every five minutes following the “5 Minute Strategy” standards.
• Never leave the pool deck unguarded.
• Be “Rescue Ready” at all times with feet flat, rescue tube, and whistle accessible.
• Participate in all drills and respond as if they are live situations.
• Close the pool if conditions are unsafe and follow lightning policies.
• Communicate professionally with members.
• Swim test and mark children aged 14 and under per protocols.
• Enforce pool rules courteously and fairly.
• Maintain a clean facility and perform assigned duties during non-guarding times.
• Follow zone scanning and rotation policies, including breaks and cell phone restrictions.
• Ensure compliance with all policies and perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Must be 15 years or older.
• Current lifeguarding certification from Ellis & Associates or transferred certification.
• Current CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, Oxygen Administration, AED, and Blood Borne Pathogens certifications.
• Complete monthly in-service hours of Ellis & Associates training.
• Obtain and maintain all certifications within 90 days of hire.

Work Conditions and Physical Demands

Regularly required to use a computer, communicate via computer and phone, sit, reach, move around, and occasionally lift up to 10 pounds. The environment is usually moderate noise. Accommodations available for disabilities.
