Job description

Lifeguard – Seasonal

Position Type: Seasonal/Part-time (20–35 hours per week).
Location: Little Neck, In-person.

Responsibilities
  • Support agency initiatives by carrying out assigned duties accurately and efficiently, providing basic data collection, reporting, or documentation as required.
  • Use agency resources responsibly, safeguarding equipment and materials, and supporting cost‑effective operations.
  • Work effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and cross‑department teams to ensure clear communication, timely task completion, and a positive, respectful work environment.
  • Follow all safety protocols, policies, and procedures to maintain a safe work environment for staff, partners, and the public, and promptly report concerns or incidents.
  • Supervise swimming activities at the aquatics facility and ensure that policies, guidelines, and safety procedures are followed.
  • Warn swimmers of improper activities or danger and enforce pool regulations and water safety policies.
  • Administer first aid in the event of injury, rescue swimmers in distress or danger of drowning, and administer CPR and/or artificial respiration if necessary.
  • Evaluate conditions for safety and initiate the aquatics emergency action plan as required.
  • Inspect pool facilities, equipment, and water to ensure safety and usability.
  • Supervise and assist in cleaning the pool and related facilities and equipment, assist with chlorine residual water tests, record and chart water tests and accident logs, and add chemicals to pool water as directed.
  • Instruct or assist classes in the fundamentals of swimming as needed.
  • Resolve scheduling conflicts to ensure a safe pool environment when competing programs or priorities require the use of aquatic facilities.
  • Job duties are subject to change based on changing needs.
Qualifications & Key Attributes
  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard, First Aid, & CPR certification.
  • Must be at least 15 years of age.
  • Strong knowledge of water safety practices, pool rules, and emergency procedures.
  • Ability to recognize hazardous conditions and respond quickly and effectively.
  • Ability to remain alert, attentive, and proactive in a high‑risk environment.
  • Basic understanding of pool maintenance procedures, including water testing and chemical safety (training can be provided).
  • Ability to enforce rules and communicate clearly and professionally with patrons of all ages.
  • Strong decision‑making and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to assist with swim instruction or aquatic programming as needed.
  • Must be reliable, responsible, and punctual.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Consistently shows up prepared, follows through on assigned responsibilities, and meets expectations within established timelines.
  • Responds effectively to changing priorities, learns new tasks quickly, and applies feedback to improve performance.
  • Adheres to safety protocols, policies, and ethical standards, and represents the agency professionally in all interactions.
Working Conditions & Job Details

Position is typically seasonal or part‑time; work performed in indoor and/or outdoor pool environments, exposed to sun, heat, humidity, and water conditions.
Must be able to stand, sit, and remain alert for extended periods while supervising swimmers.
Ability to enter the water quickly and perform rescues, including lifting or assisting patrons in distress.
Involves physical activity: swimming, bending, lifting equipment, and assisting with facility maintenance.
Responsible for constant surveillance of the pool area to ensure safety and compliance.
Assist with pool cleaning, equipment maintenance, and water testing/chemical monitoring.
Accurate record‑keeping, including incident reports and water testing logs.
Schedule may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays; flexibility required.
May be supporting swim lessons or aquatic programs as needed.
Must manage multiple priorities, resolving scheduling or space conflicts in the pool area.
Must enforce safety rules and respond to emergencies, including activation of Emergency Action Plans (EAP).
Frequent interaction with members, guests, and staff requires strong customer service and communication skills.
Expected to maintain a professional appearance and demeanor at all times.
Work flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays during the pool season.
