Commonpoint Queens (Samuel Field YM and YWHA) is seeking a Head Lifeguard for the summer of 2025 at the Tanenbaum Family Pool. The Head Lifeguard will oversee aquatic operations, ensuring safety protocols are met while managing the lifeguard staff.

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 3 years of experience, hold current American Red Cross certifications, and be responsible for maintaining pool standards, conducting trainings, and creating a welcoming environment.

This full-time seasonal position offers a salary of $25.00 per hour, with a work schedule set from May 24th through September 1st, including weekends and late nights.

Job Title

Head Lifeguard – Summer 2025 – Tanenbaum Family Pool (Commonpoint)

Agency Overview

Commonpoint is a community center dedicated to sustaining and enhancing the quality of individual, family, and communal life throughout New York City, offering services to people of all ages and backgrounds.

Overview

The Head Lifeguard will assist the management team in the aquatic operations of Tanenbaum Family Pool, promoting and ensuring the smooth execution of all aquatic programs. The position requires close collaboration with the Managers and the Facility Director.

Primary Responsibilities

• Pool maintenance, including monitoring chemical levels, chlorine inventory, backwashing, and general cleanliness.
• Planning and facilitating in‑service training for lifeguard staff.
• Monitoring the pool deck and ensuring proper coverage of the pool according to local ordinances at all times.
• Enforcing all rules and regulations of TFP throughout the facility.
• Scheduling the Lifeguard Staff and ensuring that the pool is fully staffed and covered at all times.
• Participating in the lifeguard rotation when necessary, including throughout the month of June.
• Attending all Manager and Staff meetings.
• Conducting weekly check‑in meetings with the Aquatics Manager.
• Frequently engaging with members and customers to create lasting relationships.

Qualifications

• At least 3 years of lifeguarding experience, preferably in an outdoor pool setting.
• Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
• Ability to follow routine via verbal and written instructions.
• Responsible, alert, reliable, with a strong work ethic and positive attitude.
• Ability to self‑motivate while motivating others to stay focused and on task.
• Current American Red Cross Lifeguard and CPR for the Professional Rescuers certifications.
• Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor certification, or be working toward obtaining this certification.

Job Details

• Schedule: Full‑time basis, defined as “5 days per week” for the entirety of the summer (May 24th through September 1st), including weekends and late nights. Head Lifeguards are also expected to be available for additional weekends in September (9/6, 9/7, 9/13, & 9/14). Additional pool set‑up opportunities are available in the months of April and May.
• Salary: Hourly position at $25.00 per hour.
• Position type: Non‑Union.
• Location: Tanenbaum Family Pool.
