Job summary

Charlotte County is seeking a part-time lifeguard to protect swimmers and maintain a safe aquatic environment for all patrons at our facilities in Port Charlotte, FL. This role emphasizes safety, rescue skills, first aid, CPR, AED, and oxygen administration, with opportunities to assist with swim instruction and programming.

Qualifications include six months lifeguarding experience, CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers, Standard First Aid, ARC Lifeguard or equivalent, and WSI within six months.

Qualifications

  • Six months of lifeguarding or aquatic instruction experience required.
  • Must be at least sixteen (16) years old.
  • Have CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Standard First Aid.
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard or equivalent certification required; WSI within six months.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor swimmers and enforce water safety rules.
  • Respond to emergencies with rescues and first aid (CPR, AED, oxygen as needed).
  • Assist with swim instruction and aquatic programming.
  • Maintain pool water quality and safety equipment.
  • Provide courteous customer service and complete required reports.

Job description

This position plays a vital part in maintaining a safe, clean, and welcoming aquatic environment for all patrons. We are seeking responsible, safety-focused individuals to join our aquatics team in a part-time lifeguard role.

Key Responsibilities
  • Monitor swimmers and enforce established water safety rules and procedures
  • Respond to emergency situations, including performing rescues and administering first aid, CPR, AED, and oxygen as required
  • Assist with swim instruction and aquatic programming as assigned
  • Maintain pool water quality, safety equipment, and overall facility cleanliness
  • Provide courteous customer service, assist with admissions, and complete required reports

Education and Experience

An equivalent combination of relevant training, education and experience:

  • Six months of experience in lifeguarding or aquatic instruction field.
Special Qualifications
  • Must be at least sixteen (16) years old.
  • Must possess and maintain the following certifications:
    1. CPR/AED certification for Professional Rescuers
    2. Standard First Aid
    3. American Red Cross Lifeguard or nationally recognized equivalent.
  • Within six (6) months of position assignment:
    1. Must obtain and maintain American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Certification
Additional Competencies
  • Knowledge of local and State water safety rules and regulations, and pertinent rules, regulations, and County ordinances.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of rescue methods and first aid as applies to accidents in the water and surrounding areas, including CPR and Auto External Defibrillator and oxygen administration.
  • Demonstrated skill in swimming, water rescues, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and first aid.
  • Knowledge of common swimming pool chemicals including water quality testing reagents
  • Ability to be proactive in regards to safety precautions, to recognize emergencies, and to take appropriate action.
  • Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
  • Ability to make recommendations and to use resourcefulness and tact in solving new problems.
  • Ability to prepare effective correspondence on routine matters and to perform routine administrative functions without referral to supervisor.
  • Ability to handle distressed swimmers and patrons in a professional manner.
  • Ability to ascertain priorities and meet deadlines and objectives.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, verbally and in writing, in English.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Good physical condition and sufficient strength to control struggling adult swimmers.
Working Conditions

Work is exposed to outdoor weather conditions or irate customers, extreme noise, odors, heights, and/or dust.

Risk/Safety Conditions

The position requires exposure to some risk related to physical and/or mental health and safety (e.g., exposure to environmentally hazardous material, heavy equipment, assault and battery, communicable disease, etc.).

Physical Activities

Walking, pulling, grasping, hearing, seeing up close, seeing far away, kneeling, reaching, pushing, talking, standing, finger movement, depth perception, climbing, swimming. Frequent lifting of up to 25 pounds with occasional lifting up to 50 pounds. Good physical condition and sufficient strength to control struggling adult swimmers.
