Job description

Job Title: Lifeguard (Security)

The starting salary range for this position is $15.00 - $15.97 per hour. The full-time benefits package includes medical, dental, life, disability insurance, and more, along with generous paid time off and free membership. Part-time benefits will vary.

1. Job Summary:

The Lifeguard supervises the aquatics area to prevent accidents, assist swimmers, and respond to emergencies. They create a safe, enjoyable, and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and satisfaction, in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Responsibilities include overseeing activities such as open swim, water exercise, swim lessons, and lap swimming.

2. Essential Functions:

1. Maintain constant surveillance of the pool area, review all emergency procedures, and respond immediately to emergencies.
2. Perform first aid when necessary and complete incident/accident reports.
3. Understand and communicate policies and guidelines for the pool and related facilities.
4. Attend monthly in-service trainings.

3. Relationships:

This position reports to the Aquatics Director or Aquatics Supervisor, who reports to Senior Aquatics Management. The incumbent interacts regularly with supervisors, staff, volunteers, and participants.

4. Qualifications:

• Minimum age of 15.
• Current nationally accredited lifeguard certification.
• Current BLS and First Aid certifications.
• Certification in Oxygen Administration required within 45 days of hire.
• Ability to perform all lifeguard skills physically.
• Ability to hear distress signals and observe all areas of responsibility.
• Recognize swimmers in need of assistance and respond appropriately.
• Effective communication skills with all ages and diverse populations.
• Dedicated to safety and the YMCA's mission and values.

5. Work Conditions:

• Must pass the lifeguard water test.
• Remain alert in a warm environment, with temperatures of 80°F or higher.
• Stand or sit for extended periods.
• Respond calmly and effectively in hazardous situations.
• Perform rescues and survival skills, including swimming quickly and supporting adult bodies in water.
• Communicate verbally, projecting voice as needed.
• Concentrate for long periods.
