Overview

A Y lifeguard monitors the safety of members and visitors within the pool areas while upholding the Y's core values.

Starting at $14.50/hr

PAID Lifeguard Training & $150 Sign-On Bonus*

Responsibilities

  • Model the core values of Caring, Honest, Respect, and Responsibility; implement character development and the YMCA core values in all programs and aspects of center operations.
  • Continuously scan the pool (every 10 seconds), whirlpool, and sauna areas, checking for safe conditions.
  • Maintain a high level of alertness at all times.
  • Staff may be videotaped for safety audits and ongoing training.
  • Complete 2 hours of in-service training per month.
  • Participate in environment changes (outdoor to indoor, humid environments).
  • Engage in ongoing training during operational hours (e.g., CPR checks, safety drills).
  • Enforce all posted rules and other safety regulations.
  • Constantly watch the pool with rescue tube, whistle, emergency button, and oxygen mask ready; active zone scanning is mandatory.
  • Keep the pool deck clear and perform maintenance duties as assigned.
  • Test and report pool chemical levels immediately.
  • Complete accident and incident reports thoroughly and submit to the Aquatics Director.
  • Handle opening and closing procedures.
  • Maintain lap swim continuity and assist participants as needed.
  • Work effectively as part of a team.
  • Report unsafe conditions, repairs, or incidents promptly.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 16 years old.
  • Must hold a current nationally recognized Lifeguard Certification (e.g., YMCA Lifeguard, ARC, Starguard, etc.) or be willing to obtain one.
  • Must have current CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen certification or be willing to achieve it.
  • Pass a physical competency test including: tread water for 2 minutes, swim 250 yards, retrieve an object from the bottom of a 9-12 foot pool, perform a rescue, and perform 100 chest compressions.
  • Ability to perform pass and rescue skills.
  • Ability to work with diverse groups in a friendly, consistent manner.
  • Sensitivity to individuals from various backgrounds.
